Remember when I was talking last year about doing an HD remix/remaster of my 2012 collection? Yeah....it got done, and I forgot to, you know....share it with the world.

Enjoy:

Thanks--let me know what you think. I was listening today as I uploaded--I really got it sonically. the state of "virtual analog" kit....and my ability to exploit it is really dialed in. For recording at home, I mean....

Is there a wrong one? ;\)

I only upload the lossless 24/96 (WAV) to Bandacamp. My understanding is that Bandcamp will let you select the format you want....from mp3 to "cd" to full 24/96 in AIFF, WAV, or FLAC. Do they have an option for ALAC, too? Anyway....those lossless formats should be the same content.

So no loss in conversion from WAV to AIFF?

No. WAV and AIFF are the same linear PCM....they just have different data headers. FLAC and ALAC are lossless compression, which can be turned back into WAV or AIFF completely lossslessly. All four should be interchangeable as long as they're 24/96.

They don't support mp3 on Bandcamp. At least when I uploaded there today it wasn't in the list.

You mean to UPload as the artist....? I mean, they allow the consumer to chose their preferred format....they actually wouldn't be able to DO that, if they allowed artists to upload mp3. I've never tried, but that makes sense.

I thought I had already bought this album, but I can't find it anywhere on my computers. So it turns out, it was good that I hadn't because now I got a "better" version, right?

Just want to point out what makes this potentially more relevant here: this is mixed and mastered 100% in software. When you hear the old versions, they were mixed with what the kids refer to as "hybrid" of digital mixer with analog outboard....and digital outboard FX via the Lexicon and Kurzweil boxes....this is all software.

At least now, it's largely virtual Legos... ;\) plug ins inside Mixbus (and Studio ONE for mastering)…still Benchamrk and Oppo DACs respectively, but...

I finally got to drop the needle on these tracks. A very impressive overall presentation. The sound and mixes are outstanding. Some tunes I don't remember hearing but some may not have been exposed to us...
Nice arranging of parts, good wide canvas you've painted.

I think it's fair to say that ITB or OTB is no longer any consideration or critique point with these songs. Recording quality, Check!

Great achievement.

Thanks....they go WAY back, some of them. Maybe not all the tracks involved....but, i think I wrote Ricochet when I was 19 or something. The “black label” project was my attempt to just make a collection of “here are my faves Ive written in the first half of life” in 2012. I was considering stopping....at least for a while, and wanted to have a single CD of cohesive recording quality to represent.

The remix/remaster, this past year was just started as a break from this new material project, and as fodder for my developing my “HD’r’Izer”....and thinking Id just make it available with the new one. My releasing it now is my kinda admission that I might be on the Chinese Democracy release track....ha....

i'm digging 'cog in the machine'

i'm digging water on the stone.

i'm digging end of the day.

i guess i gravitate towards the bittersweet stuff today...
i get a feel of a blend of guys like Frey and Fogelburg,
if they lived in nashville!

super clean recordings, sound great even on streaming.

nice job on these Jamie. that's a solid project.

As I told you more than ten years ago, Jamie, How far I’ve come is still my favorite song of yours! Even in this revamped version the song stays upright! That’s all quality needs! A sure hit in Europe!

They are all top notch -- even the rocky ones ( I lean towards the ballads) === GIRL I USE TO KNOW ::: just begs to climb the charts ..

Would be so nice to have the two versions to A /B ...

I know I can never achieve this latest grandeur mix >> with out resorting to 100% software. Makes me feel I don't have to try any harder now -- at our peak == with the hybrid gear.

I did consider having both up for some time for people to geek on....but, man there's a LOT of down sides to that. Bandcamp not doing any kind of streaming level calibration....having to assign new album names....I just figured most people don't really care. They just want to here the best sounding version of whatever tune.

This started as a reMASTERING project--I was just going to take the 32/44.1 mix files mixed in Cubase in 2012 and remaster them. For about half the record, that would've been "fine". But, the other half....it wouldn't have sounded good. But, then as I remixed a few of those troublemakers in HD, it became obvious they now sounded better than the "good half"....so....it became an all of nothing thing. But, the end result is that, for example, Girl I used to Know has ALWAYS sounded wonderful. I wish I could tell you what was done differently. Stars aligned with Pete's recordings and my arrangement....there's not a HUGE difference in old and new for that one. But, then--you take an Ashes or With Each Passing Hour--and it's the opposite, you'd think I rerecorded tracks (I didn't)....because the new ones are SO much better sounding and FEELING than than the 2012.

But, largely, I'd ask Cjo to consider WHY he wants to compare them. Whatever he THINKS he's going to hear? And what that will mean to him". That's what he'll hear. Save me the trouble. ;\)

Certainly I could hear the difference ..?

This final mix of yours is perfection .. Would be a relief to know : it takes more than the performance of the song >> to make that final mix so stellar .

This could confirm to me > with our hybrid gear < my mixes can go no further. Save a lot of engineering grief ... ;\)

Like that friend ~~ who always seems beats you in his powerful 427 Vette -- and unless you move up to his level .. You will just have to remain happy with your seemingly idling horsepower \:o

So, listen to Andy's work using nothing but the 2480/VSF2 for mix down. Kel's "all 57" recording. Jazzoo's Two Days in November....I feel bad, because I'm inevitably leaving out some fine recordings I've heard over the years made on the 2480.

You don't have a "hybrid" mixing set up. FWIW. That has a definition and it's not "different pieces hooked together"....it's a hybrid of a digital and analog mixing tools. Just saying--you have a 2480 with a few FX boxes hooked to it. Nothing at all wrong with that...it's just not a hybrid mixing system.

So, have you made the best recordings you can make on the 2480, I think is yours alone to answer.

I don't think my recording with real drums, tube amps, pianos (both acoustic and Digital) all picked by a better tone snob than player ;\) ....is a fair comparison for you to multitrack of 90s samples and eDrums and amp sims....do you?

Yep: made the best I could -- taking in consideration with the players at the other end of the inputs AND the budget allowed / time invested ..

Guess I will never know what 96 sounds like -- 2480 sittin
at 48 ~~ for now ....
