Whitcomb is best known for the falsetto hit, "You Turn Me On." Many years later, he became very interested in pop music history, writing the book, "After the Ball." He did several albums of oldies and novelty songs featuring the tiple, or double ukulele.

I’ll bet you didn’t make it to the 2nd chorus. About 5 years before Plant started doing his crazy falsetto stuff. This guy seems to have been an influence on Eric Idle, too. Check his Robinson Crusoe novelty tune.

Page gave Bobby a swift kick in the nuts one day for acting like such a fem, and the intro to Immigrant Song was birthed!

Yep, I did. Still think no. But I've been wrong before.

I always thought Plant was emulating Janis Joplin in his early career.

Plant started playing in bands when he was 15 or 16, like most of us. That was 1963-64. Everybody cites Elvis as an early influence. Janice didn’t appear until about ‘67. Who started the high-pitched “hunka-hunka burnin’ love” thing?

Is there a rock and roll musicologist in the house?

This aired in 1966. His record with both those songs was released in ‘65.

Plant obviously had a lot of American blues influences but after listening to the vid you linked to, Xeno, I'd have to think he probably was. I mean, the similarities seem too uncanny to be coincidence. I'd never heard of Ian Witcomb before but now i won't forget him.

Thanks for the link and question. At this point, I'm with you.

It’s safe to say that Plant likely had more than one influence.
But Marriott definitely didn’t just “pretend to sing!”
