1969 I started multi tracking on two Lafayette Cassette decks that had the ability to record a mic input and a line input at the same time enabling the building of tracks by jumping back and forth between the two decks.
1972 Two Sony 640B's reel to reels which had Sound on Sound feature and could record mic and line input at the same time, so same technique as used on the Lafayette decks. I still have one Sony 640B
1975 Teac 2340 4 track reel to reel. Record on 3 tracks and mix those onto the 4th track rinse and repeat. I still have the Teac 2340
1982 Otari MX5050 8 track.
1999 First venture into computer recording. Cakewalk Guitar Studio. It was a PIA but was good idea and I liked computers but it just wasn't there. Back to Otari 8 track 2001(?) VS2480 Now this was a leap.
2007(?) Sonar Producer 6.0 So you can actually use a computer to record that isn't a PIA.
2019 Reaper. Nice works fine for me and cheap lol
How about you, what was your evolution?

There's some cool stuff in your list! Mine is:
1987: a boombox with a built in mic, a casio keyboard with programmed drums, an ibanez roadstar through a peavey backstage 50. Recorded the unheard hit song, "I Wanna Cut Your Hair".
1990 - 1995 - various tascam and yamaha 4 track cassette recorder.
1996 - tascam 488 8 track cassette
2000 - soundforge and some multitrack software, and a baaaad computer mic
2002 - tascam 688 8 track cassette
2004 - VS2480 and Tascam 688
2019 - about to transition to Studio One. Just trying to figure out which board to buy, as they just released some upgraded products.

I didn't document the years, etc. but ...
Mono cassette 2 mono cassettes 2 track reel to reel (Akai-borrowed) 4 track cassettes (Fostex X-15/Tascam?) Roland MC500MKII midi sequencer 8 track cassette (Tascam 488) 2 Adats (the horror!) VS 880 VS 1680 DAWs (various, tower and notebooks): Tracktion, Sonar(4 to X2), Reaper, Studio One (1 to 4), Mixcraft (6-8), Tracktion Waveform (9-10). I've used S1 the most when Tracktion went down, came back to Tracktion Waveform, which is my overall favorite for workflow.
4+ racks of outboard gear (still...not worth selling): preamps/compressors/EQs; guitar preamps/processing/midi; sound modules (rack and desktop); effects processors; various interfaces; midi patchbays. The usual tail chasing, lol.
Also: 8-16-24 track studio recording.
I'm giddy with delight at having DAWs; it's more than a dream come true, even with the occasional headaches.

1989-4 track cassette. 1991-Better 4trk with 48khz DAT for bouncing and MOTU Performer for MIDI. 1993-98(assembled over time)-8 track reel to reel....upgraded Performer....Mackie Mixer...DAT 1998(99?)-1680 fully stocked with CDR and 2xVSF cards: sold most everything off from the analog studio....Gigastudio+Logic on Windows for MIDI. 2003(cubase replacing Performer a few years later)-Akai DPS24+Kurzweil KSP8+LexiPCM91.....MOTU Digital Performer and Cubase for MIDI.
Then, the next step, I can put about 2012--I'd been doing client work largely in software (Cubase)....and my own work still on the Akai, with shared pieces....and I just realized that was absurd....and sold the Akai and just used Cubase for everything.
A few years back, (2017?) I realized how much smoother is was when there were two machines, so I started using LogicX on my MacBook for the audio/MIDI....and the old PC for hosting the virtual instruments to play.
When the elderly Windows box died(mid 2018), I built a new one, ground up designed for silence in music computing. Cubase 10 and Mixbus32c. I still use Logic's drummer on the laptop as my expensive complicated drum machine for song ideas.

1992 Tascam Porta one. So much fun. The first time I recorded myself playing drums, then layering bass gtr and then electric gtr... that was a thrill. I remember taking that recording over to my mom's and playing it for her. She was impressed.
1998 VS840
Shortly thereafter my grandfather gave me his VS880EX.
2015 or so I got the Tascam DP-32SD. I love it. Because it's stupid simple and the signal flow is intuitive. Thank you Phil Tipping!

I remember the horror of the ADAT in the mid 90s. To be clear, my list only included what I personally owned. I recorded in many studios, and the adats were the stalest, shittiest, most vacant recording sounds of (almost) anything I ever did. Speaking of the studio, there were also:
1994 - 1996: Tascam 238 (the equivalent of a 688, without the mixing board).
1996: ADAT (re: the aforementioned horror)
1996: An analog board to unknown tape format at a community college. Results? Who knows?
1996 - 1998: 24 track 2" tape through a console from the 70s.
2000-2002: Studios at MTSU. These were some serious shit, although I never actually recorded anything. World class, old school studios. But you had to take a music theory class, which I thought was fucking stupid (and I still think it's fucking stupid - it can be a positive thing for some, but not everyone thinks in their stupid fucking strictures), so I switched to the business track. But I can wind a cable like nobody's business

1976-1979: my best friend's father's reel-to-reel with sound on sound. 1985-1986: my best friend's Tascam cassette 4-track 1991: Tascam 424 cassette four track 1994: Sony DAT (bounced to it) 2001: Roland VS-840 2002: Roland VS-1680 2005: Cakewalk Pro Audio (but I still mostly used the VS) 2011: Reaper
Dates are approximate, I don't fully remember when I transitioned into Reaper.

Started recirding things for my Dad in the early 60s at age 4 on varroius mono and stereo reel to reels. Had one or two portable reel to reels to " play" with then a panosonic cassette recorder ariund 1970. Still used his Sony reel to reel for real recordings.
1976 Teac A400 used Dads Sony EcM(?) 22 mics on it, then bought two shure pe5eq mics, mainly because they looked cool 🙂
1981Teac 3440 1995 Sony Dat Walkman 1997 Roland VS880 1999 WaveLab 3 Sony DAT Roland VS 2480 when it was released ( had one of the first in my area) Wavelab 8 Wave Lab 9.5 2019 Cuebase 10
along the way aquired diferent mixers, added mics, external effects...lots of cable and stands
Went through different headphone phases settled on Sony 7506 and AT mx50
Monitors at first was a stereo set up. Mid 90s bought tge Event 20/20 bas 2002ish Event ASP 8. Loved those monitors, then the Event Opal came out. Was going to ignore them but a friend had just gotten a pair and said I had to hear them..... Had to order a pair, absolutley love them, Too bad they are no longer available.

(1) Two stereo decks that my Dad owned. (2) Some godawful four track that a con man sold us. (3) TEAC 3340S. Still have it. (4) Some really nice pro Scully decks and a bigass console. (5) VS880EX. (6) Generally GarageBand or Audacity, just depending.
