I have two VS-890s and two VSR-880s which are set with different inputs selected

For some reason, I am having a difficult time finding the input screen on both my VSR-880 2 and my VS-890 2. I keep studying the manuals but...(insert rant about Japanese manuals).

The VSR-880 is set for the rear inputs. What I want is to change all of the inputs to digital. I want to do the same on the VS-890, changing 1-6 to the digital input. I am trying to avoid the analog inputs altogether.

The problem I am having is accessing the input selection screen.

Sorry - I'm no help...
I always just used the analog 1/4" inputs on my 880EX
Maybe member uptildawn will know something - and chime in...?

Sorry to say that I haven't a clue, except to say that since the digital input limit is just 2 channels at a time (Left and Right), there's no way for you to get 6 separate inputs at once.
I may be wrong about the 2 channel limit, since it may be possible to assign both coaxial and optical inputs at the same time, but that still will limit you to only 4 separate inputs.

If you find it possible to assign both pairs of digital inputs simultaneously, you will also need to make sure that you sync assignments are correct - only one digital device can be set as master (internal). Each of the other devices must be set to slave (external). The VS usually prefers to be the master clock, so I would expect to leave it set to internal.
That is, if it even allows you to use both coaxial and optical inputs at the same time.

I've almost always used the analog inputs with the VS and haven't done any recording with the VS for quite a long time.

The problem I am having is assigning the digital inputs to the 8 channels. The 890 defaults to 6 analog and 2 digital while the VSR-880 defaults to the rear analog inputs.

I know there's a way to assign the digital inputs to all eight channels but I can't seem to find the menu.

pg 38 of the pdf version of the vsr-880 user guide (not owners manual). I don't know if the hard copy pages are the same - look for "digital signals" in the index, if necessary.

"Digital Recording" pg 66 of the 890 owners manual (not appendices, or user guide).

These are the starting pages I find in the pdf manuals that describe both how to make the digital connections (with its restrictions and important other info), as well as how to connect/assign your recording inputs once the digital connection is made and "In Lock".

That's as much as I am able to tell you, or investigate. I hope that's enough for you to figure the rest out. If something doesn't work as described, then possibly you got it wrong, the manual got it wrong, or the gear doesn't match what the VS needs to make the digital lock happen. Don't forget that only one device can be set to master/internal clock... the roland usually likes to be head of the class.
