It's been my experience that most Zappa fans AREN'T musicians or even knowledgeable about music. Instead, they seem to be the "hipper-than'thou" crowd who is easily impressed. I started listening to Zappa when "Absolutely Free" came out and paid attention for years. I saw him at the Hollywood Bowl for the Grand Wazoo tour. I was impressed by his guitar playing. I remember that the critics tore that music apart, citing all kinds of sources he stole from.
Zappa's self-righteous attitude got pretty tedious. He was telling the truth when he said "we're only in it for the money." Why pretend otherwise?
By the way, Zappa ripped off a lot of musicians who played for him. Not nice.
