Display not working + safe hard drive removal?

Hi all,
First post here, and I'm looking for some advice on a rather tricky bind i'm in with my VS1880, though I suspect the potential answer probably applies across all the various models...
The display no longer works! I recall some years ago reading somewhere that this is a backlight problem and that this can be replaced? If so I'd love to know how, and wonder whether such an operation would mean losing the data currently stored in the machine!? (a whole album's worth!)
If that's the case, since I can't back up the material to CD because I can't see anything on the display... I wonder whether it's safe to remove the hard drive and how this is done?
Many thanks for any help! Jim

Can't help with the display issue - I hope somebody else can...
But removing the hard drive is easy. You can find an access panel on the lower right front of the 1680, beneath the record button. Turn the machine over and remove the two small screws that hold it in place. Then with the panel removed and the machine turned back right-side up, remove the two screws that hold the drive caddy in place - careful not to lose them inside the machine.... using a magnetic screwdriver helps.
Now pull the caddy/hard drive straight out of the machine, being careful not to twist or bend it, so the rails it slides on don't get misshapen. You will feel resistance at first, until the hard drive/caddy pin connector pulls out of its counterpart on the inside of the unit.
Now your hard drive and caddy can be put safely out of the way while you work on the display issue. I assume that's going to take some hunting for instructions on what to look for and how to disassemble and repair or replace things that have gone wrong. That might be a long hill to climb.
When you're finally ready to reinstall the hard drive, be careful about sliding it back in on the rails, so you don't get it in there twisted and be sure to firmly push it into its connector again. If it's got a hard drive and caddy in it, like that the manufacturer installed, then the hard drive will sit in there nice and snug. If you're not moving the machine around all the time, you can usually leave those two little pesky screws off that hold the caddy in place, although you may want to put the cover plate back on just to keep out dust and potentially quiet the noise of the hard drive a bit.
Good luck with the display problem. Be warned that you cannot put your VS hard drive in a computer, or hook it up to an external USB/IDE adapter and expect to do anything with it, except quite possibly ruin your access to your tracks in the future. The VS doesn't like to have its files messed with in any way by a pc...... so be warned.

One of the good things about these machines being deemed obsolete these days (!!!) is that it is possible to disassemble them relatively easily and, if necessary, aquire a perfectly good machine cheaply for spares.
I am by no means an expert, but I have sucessfully stripped down an 1824 and replaced a defective screen harvested from a 1680.
The bad news is that the screen is about the last thing you get to in the disassembly process. All access is from the rear, and you would have to take out the mother board, all the boards attached to the back of the 1880 (output sockets, power supply, fan etc) and, under the motherboard, the switch board (don't know if that's the right term) to get to the screen.
I would take Uptildawns advice (essential) to remove the hard drive first if you cant back up your data
Normal rules apply. Earth yourself. Don't pull on any cables, they plug into rectangular sockets attached to the circuit board and should be gently prised out of the sockets from both side. Take notes and/or photos of where everything goes and keep all screws in some sort of order as you go (egg boxes, chocolate trays, or just gaffa tape are useful for this)
Work slowly and don't force anything, it should all eventually come away easily.
The second time I did this it took less than an hour to strip, replace a screen, and reassemble the machine - though first time took considerably longer. Good lighting and a big clear workspace is recommended.
Good luck

Very jealous of your mechanical / electronic skill, Drachir.
Hope you’re somewhere near SW FL... so when my VS2000 starts acting up I can bring it to you for repair. Please don’t report back that you’re in Alaska or in the UK!

Larry!
Worse than that - I stay in Shetland, out there in the North Sea between Scotland and Iceland, and more bad news, I really don't have 'professional' skill - I just like taking things to bits when they go wrong. I am from the 'I fix it' website school of bodging!
As I say, one of the beauties of these machines is that it is still possible to actually dismantle them and to replace parts relatively easily, something which these days is becoming increasingly difficult.
Good luck

Thanks so much! At least the hard drive removal looks pretty straighforward and I don't have to worry about losing the files!
As for the backlight, I fear dissasembling myself may be asking for trouble. Perhaps I'm better off looking for a cheap machine as suggested!

Hey, D — you know you killed me with that response... sheeze, oh man!
Be sure to let me know when you’re in FL. You can stay here in Paradise as long as you need and we’ll mod my 2000. Thanks in advance, mate!

Larry G - I will book my flight tomorrow!! Freezing cold here
Jimviz - When my display failed I replaced the screen rather than the display circuit board, which solved the problem for me.
I really don't know, and would not like to say, what your problem is. Though people do seem to have had more issues with the actual screen than the circuit boards.
In my case, I bought a very cheap 1680, which incidently paid for itself as it had 2 effects cards fitted, and have used that as a donor machine. There are some ridiculously cheap machines on ebay these days, and I have both an 1884 as a spare for myself and a 1680 which is the donor machine (I will sell parts if necessary). Unfortunately I haven't got a working screen that I could send you as I needed it for myself.
All the best
