Hello all. I have a VS 1824 and during playback, Iím getting a ďIDE DriveERR: 40Ē error message. I looked through the owners manual, service manual and users guide and no specific mention of that error code. I even searched the internet and this forum, but nothing. I havenít noticed any issues like audio dropout and everything seems fine when this error code appears. Anybody know what this means and do I need to replace my hard drive?

Even if you never locate the meaning of that error code, I would think it might be a good idea to start looking for at least a spare or secondary replacement drive and maybe figure out how to go about backing up and later recovering any important work - before your current drive can go belly-up.

Does anybody happen to know what type of hard drives the VS 1824CD will take? Is there a compatibility list out there? Also, can a mod be done so that it will accept some kind of flash drive (e.g. Compact Flash)?

You might get a good idea of how to access the hard drive in your 1824cd by using a copy of the service manual - I found a copy here in pdf form - http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&...rYUX1n_MOxL-Z-j

I remember Roland saying it wasn't removable, back when it was introduced. That's because they mounted it underneath the CD and didn't make a front panel access to it - only the CD tray. I'm sure it can be removed, but it might be a major undertaking and possibly require the dismantle of a major portion of the unit. If you're comfortable with dismantling your VS and are confident to put it back together properly, then that's how you will get to your hard drive. Maybe access is easier than I imagine.

I'm sure a mod can be done to change the ide drive to compact flash, since so many have done that with their own recorders. The main questions you will need to ask yourself are -
How will I get to the drive, when I want it?
Is there a way to make an external access to it and am I capable of making this mod to my 1824cd?
What cf parts (adapters, cards) will work and how many adapters will I need to try before I have one that works completely (as in, without having to reinitialize the drive every time I power up the VS)? CF cards and adapters have proven to be more consistent than SD cards and adapters, by the way.

Hopefully, you can manage this yourself and successfully revive your machine soon. Post back with questions whenever you have them. This community is full of people who do their best to help out.

Hi uptildawn. Yeah, I have taken apart the entire VS 1824 (including the main board), so I am VERY familiar with the internals of the unit. Replacing the hard drive will be the easy part! All you have to do is remove the bottom plate and disconnect a couple of power and data cables. I have a CF to IDE converter that Iím willing to try out. Iíll let you know how it goes \:\) as I said before, I appreciate your help and quick response. If you ever have questions of how to gut and reassemble the VS 1824, I can help with that for sure!
