Hi, Iím trying to record old VS-880 songs onto a 2480 and Iím having trouble getting the 880 to send a sync signal. Should it send a sync signal out of the digital out or midi out or both? The only setting I can see in the 880 is int or ext sync. If itís set to internal - does that mean it will send out of the midi out or could it have been turned iff somewhere internally ?
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

digital sync/lock and midi time sync = two different operations..... You need both sometimes. You need digital sync/lock if recording through the digital paths - internal/external clock settings are in regards to this digital sync. MIDI MMC and MTC settings found in the various utility menus are to lock 2 or more devices to whatever machine is sending the timecode reference.

Another device used for syncing multiple machines is the recording of a sync track - which I have never personally had to deal with - this recording on some machines takes up an available channel and I believe on some machines is separate from the audio channels, but beyond that, you need to get more specific advice - maybe a google search for recording a sync track will be helpful.

Thanks @uptildawn . I am now, thanks to you and others, seeing that there are two different issues here. Musical timing synchronisation was my initial concern. The sync track on VS-880 recordings (in fact on all VS models) is dealt with separately from recorded sound and does not require its own audio track as it did with analogue recording.
