maximus757 maximus757 Space Cadet Registered: 03/06/20 Posts: 8	Hello to all, I have owned a Vs2480 CD for 12 years with no issues at all. I recently walked into a pawnshop here in melbourne fl and saw a vs2480 HD so i figured why not since the price was only $150. WHAT DO I HAVE TO LOSE? I figured " I got this". The salesman told me what was wrong. I have spent 9 hrs trying the following: changed on board batt, reformat drive using my other machine, took the machine apart to clean it except the section by the internal screen. so far it is still apart but still no luck getting all the buttons to work. the machine works fine using the external vga but I need the buttons to work so I can update the firmware version(2.0) to the latest (2.505). I did find a connection by the screen that was disconnected and I thought that's got to be it. NO. Definitely, someone was inside the machine before. Should I keep digging or just don't bother? I hate giving up on such a fine peace of equipment. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

powermac powermac Planeteer Registered: 02/21/16 Posts: 396 Loc: Houston, Tx	It's a somewhat common problem with the 2480. Have you tried any contact cleaner on the transport controls? I know it has helped many people on this forum.

I want to update the 2.0 firmware using a laptop and a midisport uno but I have to press 3 buttons to initiate the file transfer. I thought about a keyboard but I don't think those functions exist on the keyboard. Mean while, I have full control with the mouse. Pretty weird if you ask me.

March March Planeteer Registered: 04/26/99 Posts: 2069 Loc: IA	If memory serves, the transparent plastic buttons that change color don't "press" directly on separate sensors on the motherboard (or extension of the motherboard that takes input from the buttons) there is a plastic interface that protects the contacts themselves. You might want to check out if that layer of plastic is in place. It's kind of weird that all buttons stopped working. The whole internal setup might have been slightly displaced. Just a thought. maximus757 maximus757 Space Cadet Registered: 03/06/20 Posts: 8	So I went back to the pawshop and asked them to allow me to get in touch with the original owner. He called me back and told me the reason why he gave up on the vs2480 is because he tried to update using midi files and something went wrong. when he tried to reboot the machine he lost control of all the buttons I mentioned. Roland told him the only way to repair it is to replace the main board with the firmware chip. Once again everything works with the mouse and keyboard but the only buttons that respond to physical touch are play,Rec,Rew, Stop and wheel jog. At least now I know what I am up against.

March March Planeteer Registered: 04/26/99 Posts: 2069 Loc: IA	So you haven't tried updating the OS from a CD? I'd do that first, before assuming that the motherboard went bad. What version of the OS do you have? It's gotta appear on the first startup screen

maximus757 maximus757 Space Cadet Registered: 03/06/20 Posts: 8	Thanks for replying. I have not tried to update the 2.0 OS version that is on the vs2480 HD. However, I do own another VS2480 CD with OS 2.5 in excellent working condition. I removed the motherboard and temporarily installed it on the older machine for testing purpose. It booted up showing the new 2.5 version but still no change from the buttons response. Tomorrow I will try swapping power supply and eventually the touch control board. I'm already all in. Another 50 screws shouldnt hurt too much Edited by maximus757 (03/20/20 11:45 AM)

maximus757 maximus757 Space Cadet Registered: 03/06/20 Posts: 8	Last night I was able to swap power supplies and the same issue with the buttons still exists. I’m going to try swapping the panel with the jog wheel. Before I do that, I will disconnect any other panels connected to it. I am doing that because I was told by a Roland rep that sometimes one faulty panel can affect a large section to become inoperable. He said think of it as an old Christmas tree rope light. I’ll post my findings.

maximus757 maximus757 Space Cadet Registered: 03/06/20 Posts: 8	I was able to fix this issue or at least pin point the cause of it. As I suspected, the the main touch board under the LCD was bad. Now the hunt is on to find a new board. Very unusual problem. Thanks all.
