For years was always able to simply just CLICK the CH LINK -- if we wanted to release the channels to separate L & R ... No such luck -- tonight . I have been searching the manual for about an hour -- no secret ALT DEL CTRl to unlock that LINK

Sure liked the days when a screwdriver fixed just about anything --- just apply more or less pressure -- \:D - the right angle ....and you had it.

We used to have a special tool on our electronics bench for tough intermittent problems. It had it's own special fitted spot in the drawer, and was labeled the "Calibration Hammer."

Never seen this in 25 years -- ROUTING shows all LINES (tracks) locked stereo ?? Even using my Routing Template ??

GOT IT -- Set up at NEW Project --- BUT 16 BIT ( since this Project came from VS 880 ) -- IMPORTED the WAVs and the ROUTING auto locks the lines in stereo pairs .. some factory thing , I guess .....

Luckily we are shut down -- so another hour won't matter
Haven't used 16 bit >>> since about 98 ...

So - what happens if you set up a new project at 24 bit? Does it then allow you to use mono tracks, unlinked and unlocked?
If it does, then put a couple of those 880 16bit tracks in there - I'd bet almost anything that you can keep them mono.

Frankly, I don't see the reasoning behind locking channels to stereo pairs just because you create a 16 bit project...... that's silly to me.
Does the 2480 manual document this behavior in any way?

24 bit works fine -- just the selected 16 locks the pairs ..

Checking the manual reveals a little bit as to why you might have channels locked in stereo pairs when using a 16 bit mode in the 2480 - as it doesn't make any sense otherwise.

The "problem" of being limited to stereo pairs and 16 bit exists when using the two primary 16 bit modes. These are meant to use with mastering or burning mixes and thus - I'm assuming the thought behind this peculiarity - you don't NEED to have mono track flexibility (which I think is utter nonsense, because I can imagine anyone using the M16 mode to master tracks requiring full control over the left and right channels independent of one another, for instance.

At any rate, MT 1 and MT 2 modes are also 16 bit modes, if my recollection is correct. On every other VS model I have ever known anything about, those two modes allow total flexibility and do not lock the channels in stereo pairs, so I assume this is the case with the 2480 formats as well.

So, if requiring the ability to manually control individual tracks is a necessity, then the obvious choice, when wanting to use a 16 bit mode, is to use either MT1 or MT2 and ignore the restrictions of the M16 and CDR modes in those cases.

Not that there's anything that can be done about the design now - but it sure would have been helpful had the 2480's design been able to allow a person to convert or morph projects of one mode into another mode in order to maximize the use of those EIGHT recording modes. I never could understand the thought process behind having to choose a recording mode at the start of a project that is static and cannot be changed or otherwise converted at different stages of the project life (say from full multitrack record and mix to 2-track mastering, to the final CD layout and burn). I mean what's the use of building proprietary tools and corralling people into a box, if you're not going to include all the tools that person require to produce a professional, quality product without hacking the system, or jumping through hoops of workarounds in order to get a job done???
