So I'm trying to update my 880 to 3.205 from 2.090. I have an E-mu xmidi1x1 usb-midi cable. When I load and send either the A or B version via the SMF Update App the VS shows that it's receiving 1/8 but then immediately says "Mid Format Error". For fun I let it go all the way through the first time, but the system is not updated, still on 2.090.

I have double checked that the MIDI out on the cable is plugged into MIDI in on the 880, and I have also made sure my cable's drivers are good.

Are you sure you have the correct format of the os and the smf tool? I'm just asking and hope you double check this, because I can't think of what else it could be. I also don't know if it's possible to use the os or the smf tool, if either is the wrong format for your computer - that seems a bit unlikely to me, but it's worth double checking maybe.

Could be the midi interface.
I did a search and found this:
Amazon review of the EMU midi interface

Yeah I'm sure. I'm on Windows. Just to see if maybe they're files are corrupt I tried to download the Mac version, but I can't even open the archive to get to the midi files. I also tried two version of the smf updater.

Do you have a recommendation for a midi sequencer to try?

Actually, I recommend using the smf tool that roland supplied. It was by far the simplest way for me to update the os on my 1680 and swapping between the a and b versions was made easier by that too, I think.

The have been numerous problems over the years with usb/midi interface cables - cheap often works better than expensive, etc. I don't know that there's ever been a brand recommendation even, because most are so generic.

What has always worked for me and in every report I've ever read about it/them, is using an actual hardware interface - an audio interface that has midi, or even just a simple single or dual channel midi interface like the midiman midisport usb boxes.

One last thing you might try with your emu is to try whichever cable you didn't use the first time - sometimes ins and outs are labeled backwards. Also, just use one cable going into the VS.... not sure that it will make a difference, but don't bother hooking up both, just in case. But be sure and go IN to the VS.

I tried everything you said thus far, and I'm still getting the error. I went ahead and bought the Audiobox i2 that was mentioned in the previous thread since it worked for him. I'll need an interface soon anyway even if it doesn't allow the update to go through.

I also bought the Startech IDE to CF adapter that comes with the mounting tray and a transcend 8gb 133x cf card. If I can get it all to work I'll let yall know. Going to be at least 10 days before it all gets here (if it gets here despite everything going on in the world...).

In the meantime, I'm gonna play around with my newfound toy. Already got an old mixer hooked up to it for xlr input

good move on the mixer. I used to have a dedicated 4 channel phantom power supply and had to use xlr to trs adapter cables. Did that for a long time, before finally getting a proper rackmount 8 channel preamp.

Hope the update and the mod are a success.

Audiobox came in and the 3.205A update worked! I'm still waiting on my IDE/CF adapter though. Amazon still doesn't show it as shipped even though I made the order last Wednesday.

Good deal on the update! I hope the adapter gets to you soon.... it's a drag to have to wait an extra long time.
