I don't recall seeing a definitive post on here about good, compatible hardware for the 880, so I'm making this post with info on how I did mine...

Update Method

3.205A > UpdSMF > Audiobox i2 > VS-880

CF Conversion

StarTech.com 3.5in Drive Bay IDE to Single CF SSD Adapter Card Reader (35BAYCF2IDE)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000T9QQP0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Transcend 8GB CompactFlash Memory Card 133x (TS8GCF133)

The mod didn't go quite as planned. I was intending to use the drive bay it comes with in the original HDD slot. However, the 50-pin ribbon cable is too short for it to reach. You can see in the pics below how the ports on the CF/IDE adapter are arranged, forcing the ribbon cable to have to wrap under it, thus losing valuable length. Not wanting to wait another 10 days for a longer one, I threw my plans out the window and decided to cut a slot on the side and do my best to mount it. I took the adapter off the drive bay and mounted it using the PC bracket it also comes with (flattened with a hammer :D) then used a couple of small bolts I had in my junk to secure it to the case. Notice how stuffed in it all is. I wrapped it using the old HDD sleeve and put the foam on top (the pic shows it underneath but I moved it) to keep the case from shorting everything out. I booted the VS up, it initialized the card, and I made sure it would record, save, and still be saved after a shutdown. All good.

Next up I took my sample bass track to my PC. I used an Insignia external card reader ($24 at Best Buy). I found and downloaded VSWE to convert the VS track to a .wav file. At first the program didn't work. I researched the error complaining about a mscomctl.ocx error then downloaded and registered the file. The program loaded but didn't see any partitions. I took a guess and ran it as Administrator...it immediately saw the partitions and the track I recorded. The program is a little wonky, but I guess it was made like 15 years ago so I'll give it a pass. My OS is Windows 10 Pro x64 1909.

Finally after a few weeks of planning, research, waiting, trial and error, I've brought my old VS-880 into the current gen of recording. Do I recommend doing this? YES! Do I recommend the Startech adapter? Not really, unless you can get a longer ribbon cable, but I can confirm that it is compatible. I was impatient so I made it work.

I already have my band's first official recording session with it tomorrow. My drummer and I are gonna lay down a few tracks. We can listen to the playback using an old Yamaha audio receiver and speakers I forgot I had. The digital out from the VS matches nicely with the digital in on the Yamaha (I used an old, thick yellow RCA video cable; don't give me any lip about ohms or cable quality! It sounds fine and better than the regular L/R mix out).

After recording I will import into Cubase for editing and then to Sound Forge for mastering. When I have something substantial I'll post some recordings on here.

If anyone needs any tips or links to the software required let me know!

pics...not sure how to do images w/dropbox...last pic shows that I have 4 partitions at 1GB each. I bought an 8GB card, it was about the same price so why not?

Hey - you got it in there and it works! That's what counts in the end. That yellow video cable is actually just fine - it should be 75 ohm IIRC and that what's needed at the spdif rca output...... good going!

good job. i put an sd card in my vs-880 and it seems to work fine. i used a compact flash for my vs-1680 (on the external scsi bus) and that works great for transfering files to the pc.

i mounted the vs2400 drive outside the vs2400 in an external drive dock, and I can access it via usb or esata to the pc (just not concurrently, has to be only one device using the drive at a time.
so yes there are many ways to alleviate the small drives and propreitary file formats...

hard to beleive these are 20 something year old devices and they still work great.

so much nice having physical faders rather than a mouse....
