I've been talking with a guy on ebay about buying his 2480. He doesn't know how to check how many cards he has and he's afraid to take the bottom plate off.
Is there an easy way for him to power up the unit and check?
On my 2000, when powering up it says loading VS-2 card, but if it has a -3 card, will it give him the same message?
Thanks,
Ron

Sure, Have him fire the VS up and press "Effects". If all 8 slots show effects on the screen, you have all cards

I was actually hoping to see a -3 card in it. Don't know how to see that. I have two -2 cards. I imagine it has at least one of these.
I'll ask him to check the effects after power up. Thanks,
Ron

If it has any 3-cards, you will see effects patches that are not common to the 2-cards. Also, the effects themselves must be stored on the internal hard drive in order to be functional at all. If the seller cannot verify that the effects are at least in part those of the 3-card variety and the effects can be applied to tracks in full use mode (not demo mode), then you will have a definitely problem, if you're after 3-cards specifically. Also, be very certain that the seller has the original 3-card effects CDs for any effects installed, or they must have a verifiable copy of any and all 3-card effects that were purchased and installed to this machine. The seller must also either include all of those CD discs and probably the installed internal hard drive with intact installed effects and not wipe the drive clean before sending the machine to you.

These 3-card effects have the screwiest protection scheme implementation I think I have ever heard of - How many people out there are out hundreds to thousands, just because they don't have access to 3-card effects anymore, I wonder?

Yea, he didn't mention or show any discs at all in his listing. Probably not going to have a -3 card. That'll put me out another $350. I'm just so tired of all the limitations of my VS2000 and have tried so many computer editors. I should have never sold my 2400 with the -3. I think the 2480 will be nice.
Thanks guys
Ron

You can easily get a setup cd-r from Roland if you contact them. That way you could install the card properly. It'll cost you just a few $ for sending it out.

I gave up on the extra cards "screwiest protection scheme implementation "--- TC Electronics racks are about $100 each -- more than enough tweak-able quality in those M ONE XL -- hundreds of presets ... all connected via the AE 7000 -- digital I/O
