The VS2400 I bought on ebay has a -3 card and an LN plugin, but the seller doesn't have the discs. BTW the seller didn't even know that it had the card or the plug in.
Is there some way to back up the -3 disc from wherever it lives in the unit to CD?
The card and plug in works. I've used them several times. Just worried about the future.

Hi Ron,
If you are using a VGA monitor it should be located in the drop down menu under the CD-RW tab on the top of your screen.
On the bottom of the list should be "Plug-In Backup" which lists all your plug-ins and the VS8F-3 Plug-in program.
Bye the way the 1176LN was usually bundled with the LA2A so you might have that one too.

Hey Ed, thank you so much. I feel like a knucklehead for not finding this on my own. So obvious. I was able to backup both.
So, I bought a like new 2400CD on ebay for $550 (free shipping) not knowing it had any plug-ins. I think I got a pretty good deal now that I have the backup discs.

Glad to hear that worked for you Ron, the 3 card does add a lot of value to the unit, especially with 3rd party plug-ins.
I really like some of the Roland effects too and have been using a preamp preset for most of my mastering even though I have all the 3rd party plug-ins.
Don't feel bad for not finding the plug-in backup, there are lots of things to learn.

Got my VS8F-3 card in today, installed it in Slot 1, put in the Roland Effects CD that came with it (all from Ebay Purchase). Followed Roland instructions on install of effects from CD. Does fine until I don't get a screen to "Authorize" like the instructions say, instead is says Trial Version. Any suggestions? The CD is not new, that is for sure, but I don't get any kinda disc error.

Itīs a "classic" problem with second hand VS8F-3 Cards and Plug-Ins.
The Plug-In CD is Authorized to another VS8F-3 Card and will not work
with the Card you got ....
Did you buy it from "fleaBay" ? Maybe the seller mixed it up with another
3-Card by ignorance or maybe itīs a scam 
If so, try to get a refound or return ...

Well, the seller has a free return policy with paid shipping, over 2,600 buyer reviews, 100% positive in 12 months, so I'm sending back. He has accepted the return. I will only purchase from a recommendation from someone here or the FB VS2480 group that knows what is going on and has legit info on who owned the board and the proper CD! I explained it all to him, as he has another one of these boards to sell. Maybe he did mix them up, I'm just not willing to buy from someone that doesn't know the system.

Most likely he mixed his two cards and sent the wrong one ....

Nice if you find one with TCR 3000 Reverb plug-in CD. Really good !

I'm new to the world of VS recording. I recently purchased a VS2480 that had a VS8F-3 card in it. When I accessed the FX on the card it said "Trial Version". I concluded that I had to format the hard drive and reinstall the plugins for them to work correctly.
I backed up the Roland and Antares plugins to CD and proceeded to format the drive. After about two days and multiple times trying to format the drive I had success.
When I re-installed the plugins it still said "Trial Version". I ended up buying another VS (VS2480CD) which also had a VS8F-3 installed. I had better luck backing up the plugins.
I installed both VS8F-3 cards in one machine along with the two VS8F-2 cards and everything seems to be working fine now.
I'm looking forward to learning how to use the machine and making some great recordings. Thanks to everyone on this site for making things a lot easier and providing a wealth of information.

Noob question - If you have a VS8f-3 installed in a 2480 and the HD dies, and you don't have activation disk(s) for the efx card - is it rendered useless?

Not useless. If you have another 3-card installed as "Key Card" in slot A in your
2480 you can install this "useless" card in slot B and then use all plugins
on 3-card in slot A on the 3-card in slot B as well 
And if you find an un-authorized setup disc for Rolands 5 original plugins
on, for example "fleabay", you can install / authorize those 5 plugins to
your "useless" card and at least have those 5
