Hi,

I am trying to run test mode on the VS2480 I just acquired. 1st time on using a 2480. There is just question marks on the left side of the screen all the way down. Everything on the right shows OK. I'm not sure how to begin the tests on the left.

I pressed FdTest and the motorized faders began a test, but stopped on 10 after it shimmied a little. 9 and 10 both move around some when nothing is happening. Likely that board needs to be replaced unless I just work around it.

Hmmm. can't seem to add a photo here without it being at a web address? Is that right? Here's my screenshot from my website, two ways.

Thank you for any info.

Arcane knowledge. I had no idea there was a "test mode"...
There is no mention of it in the user's manual.
I suspect the "exec" button would start testing the functions marked by the checks. Then the results would appear where the ?? is.
Hopefully a guru will drop by to answer your question. Sorry...

Also, is it worth upgrading from 2.503 to 2.505? I cat find an update list on the differences.

Thanks so much. I had heard that on the Test Mode... nothing on it yet, so nothing to lose, but WHY in the world does it do that? It should only do that if you purposefully go to a function labeled "Erase Drive or Reformat HD"! So sorry for the person that discovered this and reported it...

Why does it do that?
Detective work.
To eliminate fragmentation or other disc based glitches as a possible cause of playback errors, is my guess.
I think this mode was not in the Owners Manual but in the Service Manual held by Roland service centres.

I'm following C Jo Go's link because I have forgotten where the fader motor switch is, I just read it a long time ago in some obscure document.

Does someone still have a pdf of the service manual they are willling to share? I’ve gotten further today with the testing but would love a little more direction to actually get through it. I really have to know what all may need repair on this unit before I dive in to use it full time, which I really want to do. There are several thing not passing at this point.

THIS : I wish there was a way to just turn off the "motorized" part of the faders and have them be manual only but I have not heard of such a setting.

This goes back to one of my initial reservations about getting the 2480 when it came out. I didn't want motorized faders that couldn't be set to function manually (and I still don't). As Frank pointed out in that thread Dianna linked to, it appears there is no way to turn off the motorized function.

I realize this is somewhat labor intensive, but my suggestion would be to find the service manual online and screen capture the few pages that you find that would show the relevant info you seek.

I downloaded the Service Manual from manualslib.com. Pages 11-13 refer to the Test Mode Process and looks to have information that will be helpful. When Test Mode hits an error, like on the motorized faders, the test stops and doesn't finish. Hopefully I can find something on this... putting away until next week, off to a State Park for a few days.

Download directly here:

If you want to disable individual fader motors, then take the unit apart, remove the fader board, then remove the individual bands controlling the faders you wish to disable.

Gyorpb - You want to quantify that "No."?
Does this mean you've done the test mode before and nothing adverse happened to the contents of your hard drive? I think anyone with concerns over the claim by StyleJunkie that it would do so will want to know from someone with experience.

In fact, it would be great for StyleJunkie to explain the claim the test mode will erase hard drive contents, too....... What about it StyleJunkie? Do you know this from personal experience and can you tell us under what conditions this happened, in order to help alleviate future reader's fears or reservations?

I don't understand your reply. I just asked if you can help us and future readers to understand how you know that test mode will erase your hard drive.... It's a chance to help people understand something potentially disastrous should they get brave and go tinkering with things without some foreknowledge...

What's wrong with that request?

There is a test, “IDE Test”, which will erase the internal drive. But “test mode” doesn’t destroy your data. Yes, I have performed hardware tests on several VS’s (840, 890, 1680, 1824, 2400, 2480). No data was ever lost.

Sorry Stylejunkie, I will be sure to ask you before I want to post a reply in a thread from now on - Oops! I forgot to ask first.....

Thanks for the explanation, gyropb. I've only run a test mode on a 1680 once in the past and nothing adverse happened in that case.

Ok, this swill sound strange coming from ME, but let's not get all pissy about StyleJunkie's comment. I would have presented it the same way.

People that enter this area are being given a set of keys to the kingdom without detailed instructions. Especially the possibly prats & pitfalls awaiting them if they decided to run a particular test and just blow thru the button presses without READING THE SCREENS FIRST.

Sure, you get a warning, I believe, but if you go too quickly, or you have a funky button...oh well.......

This area was originally designed for Roland trained & authorized service/repair technicians. Could end-users perform these tasks, of course, but by using great care & understanding HOW the unit has been designed; and EXACTLY what each test actually does.

Also, a service manual would be an excellent additional item to have handy. (Which I see you have downloaded Dianna)

On a side note, the only times the motors on the faders are active, is when they either are being checked in Test Mode, or AutoMix is 'ON' on the system, and is reading the AutoMix recorded data you've created while mixing the playback's input/track/AUX/ or Master's Level/Pan/EQ/AUX-Send/InsertFXLevel/Surround or Mute data.

However, there are many, MANY other milestones to master on this beast first.

If a fader motor is not working properly it can move the fader without being in Automix.

Although I've never run into THAT issue before, I suppose it could be possible thru an intermittent power feed to a fader motor; but, the subroutine codes in the OS are NOT about to re-write themselves to produce power to the fader motors.

I'm going to check into a workaround for turning off the fader motors. It will most likely NOT be a simple button click to disable the motors, but more along the lines of a crack it open and add an external switch to open the circuit for the power feed going to ALL faders.

You know, as I did with the internal fan when I performed that modifications at the back of the cabinet on the original VS-2480HD unit.

I'll see what the level of feasibility looks like and let you folks know, OK?

It's pretty easy to remove the individual fader bands and thereby leave the good ones still operating.

Well sure KP, that's actually an EXCELLENT workaround & suggestion for PROBLEMATIC faders.

I was taking into consideration if an end-user wished to turn off ALL FADERS, and ALSO have the ability to turn them back on with a simple flip of a switch.

Unfortunately, based on the June 2001 First Edition Service Notes from Roland Japan, product #17059060; this scat shows three individual sets of power supply cables, most likely run within a chase wrapping of some type to the fader motors.

It would be highly unlikely to be able to group these together in an effort to shut down the power using a physical switch since they're designed to operate independently from each other; unless 'GROUPED' via software subroutines that are available to the end-user within Input Edit & Channel Edit screens.

I'll look just a bit deeper until I officially call this attempt beating a dead horse.

Thanks for your valued input 'keeppracticing'!

Hellu guys. \:\)

I have a theory, based on my own experience, about faders ”having their own life” and behave strange ….
The fader MOTORS get their information from where the FADER is located on the
dB scale so to speak. So if a FADER is getting worn out or full of dust, snot or beer, that faders contact surface will no longer send continous data to whatever IC is controlling the fader MOTOR, it will send ”bits and pieces” of data.

If you have a bad fader and open the ”MIX VIEW” on VGA screen, where you see all faders and other knobs, you can watch how the fader moves when you slowly move
the actual fader with your finger. Depending on how ”bad” you fader is the image of that fader on VGA screen can be a little ”spastic” or jump from zero to full throttle in milliseconds .
If you stop moving the fader with your finger, and the fader image still is jumping around, you have a baaaad fader.

This will affect that channels volume randomly without any control from you.
It can also trigger the fader motor to move randomly.
Remove or cutting the motors rubber band will only stop the motor from moving the fader, the volume fluctuation will remain the same …..

( I have changed the fader board twice on one of my 2480DVD´s. Converted from CD.
Bought it new in 2004. Now I have five. Two in studio and three backups / spare )

As for ”turning them off” I think it´s a bad idea IMHO because they are very
good to have when switching between INPUT MIXER , OUTPUT MIXER ,
Channel 1 - 16 and 17 - 24. And for auto-mixing of course ......

Sorry for long post, but I just try to explain as good as possible

What do you think ? Other theories or facts are welcome.

Cheers !

For live shows, I REALLY need the faders to go to their assigned locations when I switch between FOH and MONITOR (aux out) setups.

It is a weakness of physical potentiometers (faders) that they are subject to dust and corrosion. Someday we will all be using touchscreens. (I suspect most younger mixers already are!)

If you remove the band, the motor is no longer connected to the pot and the volume won't change - it stays where you set it with the mouse/snapshots/automix.

AND will also work this way via the Remote Console option from your PC.
