When the Apple watch came out 5 years ago, my son, who was working for Microsoft at the time, bet me I'd buy an Apple watch, knowing I have been an Apple guy since 1985. I have an iphone, ipad, iMac, and find it easy to interconnect all.

I told him the watch did nothing for me and I wouldn't be buying one. True until yesterday, when I bought one for Eileen as a gift, and ended up buying one for myself. Not sure what I am going to do with it yet other than help Eileen learn how to use hers. Maybe it'll help me feel like a spy or Dick Tracey. LOL. I really like watches, BTW, and have a dozen already, so this does work for me as a watch anyway.

Five years later, am I still on the hook to my son? Now that he works at Amazon (and is REQUIRED to have an iPhone) is the bet invalid?

Bash away Apple haters \:\)

We decided on the watch to help us monitor excercise and heart rate/EKGs. Several of our friends find them very useful.

It also works as a toy to keep is busy during Covid times.

I didn't buy the $1300 ceramic version as much as I wanted to. \:\)

No matter the proof offered, deny there was ever a bet. This is the new normal and works with everything.

Rather wear my Grand Fathers or Dad's cool one he received for 40 years at his job -- You do have to wind them & they are only gold tooth

OK, do I have any leverage with the fact that my son's wife has owned an Apple watch for two years?
I love this kid and he has become my Scuba diving buddy too as of this year. Does that require me to tell him?

They all tell time 🙂

Love my Samsung Galaxy Watch, tracking steps a day, seeing who is calling on the watch without getting the phone out, email, text.... very cool. Have not tried doing the Dick Tracey and answering the call on the watch........yet.

I’m a big fan if Samsung phones , just got an s10, watches and TV’s.

Enjoy the watch, they all pretty much do the same thing, which ever works best for you.

I have an iPad only because there were a few apps I wanted that were not available on other platforms. 😀 have a love hate relationship with it....love to hate it . 😂😂😂

Not a problem. Even smelling like gasoline, soot on the face and matches in hand, just deny. It is the new normal.

I haven't worn a watch in years. Never was one for expensive jewelry.

But most of my co-workers have smart-watches, and get a lot of use out of them. So I'm thinking about it.

I believe your son deserves to know of your acquisition - I don't see that he specified a time period when his bet ended.

I have an older version IPhone which serves as my timekeeper, portable browser, text, email and call center and guitar tuner. Other than that, I intentionally use very few other apps. I don't like the notion that some apps collect data that I'd just as soon keep to myself thank you.

We've recently seen phones being used in Contact Tracing for Covid. I'm not sure exactly how that works, but I suspect I'd be uncomfortable knowing the details.

I use GMail, despite knowing that to some degree or other, Google scans your content and of course, I assume they store everything somewhere in the cloud.

Apple has the appearance of being better than some companies at trying to protect the data on your phone from police searches, claiming that they can't break the encryption algorithm so police can search your phone.

I fear Amazon and Google worse. Amazon bought Ring (home security cams, hooked to the network, sharable with your neighborhood and I have to assume, Amazon). Amazon's Alexa and Google's Assistant are ripe for abuse - if not today, then potentially whenever they decide to make it so).

I disable constant location on my phone (unless I'm using the map app for driving directions). But you see stories of police tracking phone locations by triangulating cell tower signals. It's just all too much beyond my comfort zone.

The watch tracking your health seems another reach into your personal space. If it detects irregular heart or other problems, maybe your insurer (or others) want that data. Do you want them to have it? Can you be assured they can't access it?

Your doctor is another data vacuum collector. You sign 20 pages of fine print giving them full access and sharability rights then tell them WAY more about your health and lifestyle than they possibly need to treat a sniffle.

Sorry - reward your son and enjoy your new wrist technology. \:\)

You are not required to sign these releases. I always cross out and initial about half the page. I only authorize them to release medical records to me personally; that way I can decide who gets them and on what terms.

I haven't worn a watch since about 1983. It was an old Omega that my parents gave me in the 60s. I was shovelling snow and I guess water got in it. I still have it but I doubt very much that I could get it repaired.

Thx SkyWave - I use similar tactics to try and limit their data grab. It becomes problematic if they decide to deny service without carte-blanche signatures.

I went to a local hospital to get a... maybe a CT Scan, I don't remember the details. The hospital had the machine and my doctor wanted the image. The hospital laid a stack of 20 pages in front of me for carte-blanche release signatures. Rather than try to digest all of that fine print and give away my rights for a single image, I turned and walked away. Ultimately, it was my loss.

“Siri, am I lactating?”

“No, Ulank, but if you were you probably would want to get your pituitary gland checked out.”

“Then why does my cat keep licking my nipple in the morning?”

”Because she’s hungry and you have the chest hair of a calico.”

“Oh”

I love watches as I said before. I have 8 diving watches, 2 R0lex, and about 4 others.
They are jewelry, but I am OCD about time and promptnes. I taught in a school for many years that ran on bells, what do you expect?? \:\)

I bought my son a dive watch for his birthday.I think we're even .LOL

In a conversation with my son today, I mentioned the Apple watch. He said nothing, as if he didn't remember. We then talked about golf and Scuba diving.
Let's call it a draw.
