I am working on a VS-880EX. The volume pots feel like they have sand or gravel inside them. Expecting the worst, I ordered replacement pots and disassembled the unit. These are the worst pot guts I have ever seen. Out of 9 pots only 4 passed the internal diagnostic program. I will remove, disassemble, clean, inspect and rebuild/reuse the originals as possible. Have a look...

I cleaned the pot pieces and temporarily reassembled them to see if I could salvage a few of them. I got fairly good readings from 4 out of 9 units. I previously ordered 8 of the new pots from Mouser (don't ask "why 8?") and I think I will choose the best of the leftovers to use for the master volume. Even though there were a couple more sliders that seemed to be intact, I guess the carbon tracks were obliterated by the constant grinding action. The new pots have a taller lever but I think I will use them as is and not attempt to grind or cut off the excess height. I can visualize causing all sorts of problems for myself.

Those 'levers' can be cut easily with diagonal cutters.
I've replaced them in a VS880 and Tascam US-428

Well, 72 soldering points later (8 points per fader x 9 faders), the beast is up and running. I reinstalled all the boards and parts and ran the diagnostic program and all the faders now work. On closer inspection this unit appears to have been drop kicked a few times. The corners of the case are split and a couple of the internal standoffs were broken loose. Everything went back together smoothly and I have recorded some test tracks just to make sure. If I get tired of looking at the goofy height of these replacement pot levers, I will attempt to use diagonal cutters and shorten them to a more reasonable height. The cost of parts was less than $30. Don't ask about how long it took me...I did not want to hurry through the repair and regret my haste and inattention to detail.

It gives a great satisfaction to keep older technology from going to the landfill before its time. The documentation from this site and Roland makes it possible to search out part substitutions. The members of this forum are invaluable for finding ways to keep their devices running. This 880EX is very logically laid out and if one keeps the screws and hardware securely stored with the subassemblies which they secure, then reassembly after repair is much easier. As I previously mentioned I am not by nature a detail-oriented person. But tasks like this force me to be diligent about research and organization and to visualize a successful teardown and reassembly. In doing this sort of work, I learn as much about myself as I learn about the machine. Thank you all for your help! Oh, BTW I did take your suggestion and trim the lever heights using a pair of diagonal cutters..worked like a charm! Thanks again for the tip!

This question is for a friend who is blind and is programming a small station in Palatka, FL. His VS880 - he says it is the original one built around 1997 or 98 - needs to be repaired. He is adamant that he wants to keep this particular machine and get it working again. Can anyone recommend a place he could send it for repairs? Thank you!

Probably cheaper to just buy a working one off of eBay, and swap the hard drive over. I am not sure you will be able to find anyone who repairs these.

He is sending me more info about what’s wrong with it. He’s hoping to keep it since it’s been so useful for him, but he understands he may have to bid it farewell. I’ll send details ASAP. Thank you!

Hey, DCore.
What you’ve done here is most impressive. That machine looks like it was beat up, abused and neglected. You deserve to be very proud of all the work you put into it. It’s amazing to hear that you were able to put it all back together and make it functional again.
How you approached this challenge and personally adapted yourself to succeed is also admirable.
Thanks for posting.
