Hello all,
I recently purchased a VS-1680 with broken backlight in the display. The contrast circuit is functioning but the only way to see the display is by carefully shining an external light on the screen. I found the original part number in the 1680 service manual ( LCD LM 320191 ). I have found two options for a replacement screen and wonder if anyone else has already run this race. I will post the links below. So far, the cost of parts seems reasonable and I am somewhat familiar with the headache of disassembly/reassembly. Let me know what you think...

---------

LM-320191 original LCD display for VS-1680/with CCFT backlight

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1PC-Display-LM3...5kAAOSw9mpZ7vk4

open box $50/fs
New $78/fs

-----

LM-320191T upgrade LCD display for VS-1680/with LED backlight

https://www.ebay.com/itm/5-7-inch-LM3201...DMAAOSwQ9hcwp5D

Open box $51/fs

----------

Thank you for your help!

Hi DCore

Yes go for it. Relatively easy to take the machine to bits, but you will have to remove both motherboards and all the input/output components attached to the rear of the case to get to the screen display. It is all disassembled from the back of the machine

Takes a while first time, but usual rules - don't force anything, don't pull on cables, keep screws in some sort of order (egg boxes, chocolate box trays or just upturned gaffa tape are useful) take photos, and mark any ribbon cables so they go in the right way when you reassemble

Good luck
drachir

Would you go with the original part design or with an led version of the original design?

Great advice..thank you!!! I have worked on several VS-840's and an 880EX and now I get to work on a 1680! I can only imagine the rising complexity and multiple ways in which I can lay myself away...Ah well, life is for learning!

So, I am still wondering whether it is best to replace the display screen with one identical to the original (with a fluorescent backlight) or with an LED backlight. It appears that the original has a time-sensitive life...in that the backlights seem to die well before the display screen gives up the ghost. The price seems to be roughly equivalent. Does anyone havean opinion about the better choice?

Thank you!...I ordered the new screen and it will be a month or so until it arrives. All the parts go into storage until the new screen arrives. These things are very large compared to the VS 840 and even 880. Since all the faders and switches checked out according to the internal diagnostic software, I will give everything a quick cleanup and put it aside for future reassembly.

Well, a lot of time has gone by since my last post. I ordered and received a screen but it has damage on the backside and I was not inclined to accept it. I received a second screen but it was not the correct model number and the leads were too short. I asked for and received a third screen and as they say, the third time is a charm. I ordered the first screen on October 5 and here on November 14, I finished the reassembly and tested it. Take a look at the pictures. A big "THANK YOU" to all who advised me. I am looking forward to lots of recording and enjoying this 1680.

That new screen looks great - Job well done!

If you haven't thought to do so yet, you can really protect that new screen from scratches by finding/cutting/putting a thin glass panel over it. And the glass is far easier to keep clean than the plastic display screen.

DCore — When are you gonna officially announce the opening of your VS repair shop?

Curious: Where are you located?

I am located about as far from Florida as I could be...in Seattle, WA. I am not planning on opening a VS repair station. After this last dance with the screen supplier I am sure that most owners would be burning up the phone lines about having to wait so long. I am doing this because I have a lot of time on my hands (retired) and I love to learn. I will admit , sometimes I get lost in all the technical jargon about these VS recorders but the service manuals are fairly easy to get and understand. And it sure helps to have so many others who have been making these repairs and will share their insights. So even if we aren't going to make a business of repairing these recorders, we can at least keep them working and get our money's worth out of them.

D — Shucks! Was hoping you were my neighbor... just in case my VS2000 blew up or something.

You obviously have a way with these creatures.
