One more time… How is the “song reveal” supposed to work? Are we supposed to send you a link to the song?

Then I will create another thread for the poll/song contest about 10 days after that.

Same format as previous years.

Well, I really didn't want to have to make this post. I threw my hat in here with what I thought was about a 90% probability that I could get this done in time - but regretfully life got very much in the way. Dang it.

The last two years I did a solo xmas song - and really wanted to do something with more going on this year. I still may try to throw something together on the acoustic - but man oh man - when it rains it pours.

If it helps, I am going to see what I can throw together in a day, using some melodies composed in my head. My chops on guitar are rusty, I found out in the last couple days, and I have not yet even tested my old keyboard!

So, please consider this some encouragement, and I do not intend to win this great contest, considering the participants. \:\)

If I decide to install Sonar LE tonight or tomorrow early, perhaps that will improve what I can put together, if the learning curve is not that steep, sine I have used CakeWalk versions in the past. \:\)

In any case, I am still expecting to submit *something*, if only a minute or two long, I am enjoying the "challenge". \:\)

Best of luck Webster, if you like that sort of wish, and Best Wishes to everyone else of course also. \:\)

I asked in the following thread, about the morality of using preset drum patterns
in an "original" song. I am curious as to how others feel about this, also
specifically in the context of the VS song contest.

The patterns provided by Sonar LE (if I can overcome yet another technical hurdle
as described in the thread), are truly amazing.

In the past, I have always created my own drum parts for any song that I called my own. Due to this, on a scale from 1 to 1000, comparing the finesse and complexity of my patterns, with those of say Phil Collins and Neil Peart being 1000, mine, in my honest calculation would be roughly a 3 or 4. Just "basic stuff", if you will.

Now Sonar LE has opened up a whole new world to me in this regard, but it almost seems like plagiarizing in some ways.

Should I be concerned at all about this for the contest?

I had the same feelings when my best friend acquired a Korg Karma keyboard
in his studio, and entire MIDI sequences (technically) were triggered (technically), on every note, when the KARMA engine was engaged.

It was possible to hold one key down, almost, and produce somewhat of an entire song, or segment of one. \:\)

Just finished, two days work. It's a very nice, a popular Christmas song

Eileen- vocal
Marty- piano, bass, synth, saxophone, drums.

Will we be uploading an MP3 file, SoundCloud, or other?
Looking forward to sharing.

SoundCloud would be my recommendation, as we can embed the songs in the thread.....but any song hosting option is fine.

Someone got paid to produce the drum samples. Someone got paid to provide those drum samples to you. Think of it as "hiring" a robotic drummer. Not as good as a human, but an accepted practice in 21st century music. If I use a computerized drummer, then I am the "producer" of the final musical presentation. I may be also be a player (guitar, bass, keys...) as well. As long as I don't claim to have "played" the drums, I am at peace with my work.

Calypso, When I play my Roland electonic drum set, I am chosing when to play, what to play, how loud/soft to play, and how to play it. I may suck at it, but I am still playing a drumhead with sticks, not a loop sample, pre-programmed beat, etc.

I don't think that there is any moral issue with using a drum machine or drum program. Even if you are using something like EZ Drummer, it's like calypso has pointed out. It's a product that you paid for, which is intended for exactly what you're doing with it. It's as if you paid a studio and session drummer to play drums on your song...except that would be really expensive for most home recording projects or demos. When I have used EZ drummer for demos, I have typically spent more time editing the loops and programming than I typically spend recording our drummer.

Say what? \:\)

OK, I am up from a nap. \:\)

I just got online, and only have seen this last post.

I do not think "waffling" is referring to eating a breakfast of waffles in the context that it was used, but I do not know.

Hmmm.. The internet says:

waf·fle1
/ˈwäfəl/
verb
gerund or present participle: waffling

1.
North American
fail to make up one's mind.
"Joseph had been waffling over where to go"
2.
British
speak or write, especially at great length, without saying anything important or useful.
"he waffled on about everything that didn't matter"

---

I will catch up on this thread after some coffee and food, and for now I thank everyone that read and/or posted, as I look forward to getting this drum track into my song. \:\)

(if morally OK in the context of the contest)

I just saw the "song reveal thread", and I did not wish to "clutter it" with
a question and a comment, so I decided that here in this thread it would be
more appropriate.

1 - So, do we have until midnight tomorrow (12/4/2020) to submit a link?

2 - Marty looks like he is "really dedicated and serious" behind that saxophone,
in the artwork that he posted along with his song. I look forward to listening
to his song soon. \:\)

You have about a week to post a song, if you want to be in the song contest.

I am having trouble embedding my song from Soundcloud in the reveal thread. I get an error message, saying that I don't have permission. Is there a trick to embedding the track?

Post the link, and I can embed it for you. You have to delete a bunch of code at the end of the embed code to embed it here. You delete everything from the end of the code until "< iframe >" in the middle.

Hi there.
Really too bad, but my song was not ready on time. And still isn't. I had a whole multi-track idea recorded on my laptop, but the damn thing crashed. And that idea was gone, and not only that. I was about to do back-ups from my music which is mostly still on two computers. And... I was too late. Really weird that my laptop and my desktop pc both crashed a couple of days from each other.

Secondly, I had taken most of my equipment to a girlfriend of mine. Who has a little daughter who sees me almost as her dad, but calling me uncle. Both of which I'm not really. But the girlfriend got very unpleasent to be with. So I took all my stuff and now I'm back in my own home. But I really have to set everything for my studio back up again. Bummer.

When I have a song [or more] ready, I will post some links to let everybody hear it. But I'm not in the contest anymore....Unfortunatly.

But stiil proud of what I can play [multiple instruments], And I can make my own close harmony backing vocals [without using harmony hard/ software for it.] i.e. I just sing them all live and record it. And no tuning required. If I sing it really out of tune? I record it again to make it in tune. Oldskool let's say...
Maybe I'll put up something from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
But I'll have to re- record that, since that was also on the crashed laptop. Well, enough with the boohoo about crashed hard-discs.

Anyway, merry christmas everyone, and a happy new year [without Covid please]. Greetings from Leeuwarden, the Netherland from Jeroen.
