There were and are lots of special bands.
But I think probably the Beach Boys are the quintessential American band. Number of hits, influence, longevity.
They would be up there for me too.

CNSY wasn't a band. Two of the four members (all guitarists) aren't American. The Beach Boys were not a band.
In the spirit of overcorrecting this silliness, I have my nominees:
The Funk Brothers
The Wrecking Crew
The Section
Toto Plus (I'd expand to include a handful of other session guys of the era)
Those are the bands that are on more charting pop/soul/rock music from 62-1992 (and certainly more since 92 than any of the previous nominees) than ANY other band you want to name. And you can have your pick--as they ALL qualify for that. AND...all Baby Boomers and older--none of them young'uns...all American. Respected across genre and country lines. Every SINGLE person reading this thread owns records of these bands.
I don't think they should be disqualified for not being a few ego maniacal hipsters with guitars that AL got high and touched himself while longingly gazing at their album covers.

The Grateful Dead innovated so much around music.
They changed live sound, they created their own ticketing service , they let fans tape their live shows, and on and on.
They were accidental entrepreneurs that built a massive following without mainstream success.
And what's more 'murican than that?
Plus, there are multiple Grateful Dead tribute bands working the live-music circuit that can sell out 1000+ seat venues on a regular basis.
At Dead and Company (the current iteration of the band) you've got grandparents and grandchildren going to shows together.

CSNY just doesn’t have ....enough. Eagles have huge cataloge of great songs, legendary guitarists and iconic solos. Eagles are top 5, after Petty and maybe VH etc.

don't know why some of you are so down on CSNY but I guess if you think Van Halen is musical I guess that makes sense.
its just in comapriosn CSNY is pretty limited to say best American band...probably not even top 10 as I look over all the bands folks have brought up...

This is so subjective. I'm enjoying reading these. For me, my musical taste changes as I get older. I used to think Blue Oyster Cult was the best. Ive seen them five times. We used to write to them and they would send us thier lyrics and it came on that old green and white computer paper with the driving holes in the sides. I still love them, but now I might be more inclined to listen to Larry Carlton or Lee Ritenour or similar.
