not sure why but so many of the "greatest" bands mentioned in this thread leave me cold.
never liked the beach boys or van halen or nirvana or guns and roses.
i think my favorite american band was the allman bros. when duane was alive - for me, probably the most sensual guitar playing ever and greg's singing was superior.
i would give CCR a nod just because they had so many great tunes.
CSN sang just about as well as you can w/o being lennon and mccartney.
for andy, another horn band that i loved back in the day was the electric flag.

Shit Ebeau. You are so correct! Saw BOC 4 times. Love these guys. Fuck the rock n roll hall of fame, these guys rock and have a decent brand new album out.
I have heard those live multiple times. Use to be a big Neal fan. Own 4 way street. Eagles are way better than csny.
Yeah Workbook great stuff. Black sheets of rain... I lived in Mpls. In the 80's. Saw lots of stuff.
Eagles are boring, CSNY is like allstars.
Eagles are allstar-ish. Three of the members had big, mainstream solo careers.
no, Henley maybe. CSNY were all personalities.
Are you denying that Walsh and Frey had big successful solo albums?
wait, what? Walsh is the best of the Eagles...Frey had some solo success, HEnley as well (tahnsk to some songs written by ....Petty's Guitarist)
Listen I don't want to get deep into this cause one of our Planeteers is family with Frey. but I don't talk about hits and 'success' when I talk about musical greatness.

Frey wrote some great songs....fronted a greta band as a greta singer...probably more...but I still think Joe Walsh is the biggest of the eagles as a solo artist, he's writtten tuens and monster player...

the best thing Walsh had going for him is that he's a cool dude.

well if you count their solo records CSNY has an enormous catalogue.

why would i count their solo songs if we're talking about a band?
I still say Van Halen given how the criteria is flushing out.
Distinctly American in sound they created Guitar based Longevity Influence and legacy Hit records and singles (commercial success) Broad appeal
I mean, there's not a single band that encompasses all of that more than VH. Whether they appeal to anyone's personal taste is besides the point. I would definitely have to say they check all the boxes individually and in the aggregate more than any other band that comes to mind. Aerosmith would be a relatively close second but not quite as influential as VH.

Agree with all of that.

except maybe Petty and the Heartbreakers.
I like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but it's not even close in a comparison between the scope and magnitude of influence... We're not just talkin different ballparks, we're talkin completely different worlds in that regard. Again, I'm not taking anything away from Tom Petty. He was great, but he didn't inspire millions of kids to pick up a guitar, and the type of music he played didn't influence an entire genre the way Van Halen did.
Just to pile onto my point, I should also mention Van Halen didn't just influence one genre, but their influence crossed over into numerous genres, including pop, Latin Rock, and Country. Guys like Brad Paisley and Keith Urban regularly incorporate Eddie's Style into their playing. Look at all the guitar players who played in Big Top 40 pop artists bands, like that of Michael Jackson's. Many of them were somewhat carbon copies of Eddie Van Halen, especially back in the 80s and 90s but even today. His influence and that of Van Halen's music just crossed over so many genres that it's nearly impossible to overstate their influence. I really can't think of another single act, other than the Beatles, that have been that influential. Given that Van Halen is American and the Beatles were British, then by default I would have to say Van Halen is the best American band of all time.

all valid points but I bet my wife coulndt name one VH song....plus they lose points for their drummer...

so what if EVH got a lot of kids to watch themselves playing in the mirror, it just wasn't musical.

dotn know what to say if you dont find EVH playing musical.

Sure it was. Eddie was quite good at phrasing, and it was far from just fluff and finger tapping...pay attention and listen, just listen, to any random VH material from the back catalogue...I don't even care which era....I have, and I have paid close attention to it over the years....For example, I started running back in 2007 and almost always run with headphones on while listening to classic rock/pop on local radio stations via my little iPod. I can't tell you how many times I've been struck by how tasteful his playing actually is just listening in that context, and it's something I never really paid attention to...something about running for 3-5 miles a pop like that over long periods of time that becomes meditative, and you can really hone in on things you might not otherwise notice.
CSNY hasn't influenced too many musicians or young people to become musicians in probably at least 40 years. VH has influenced countless and continues to do so to this very day.
And while my wife probably couldn't name one VH song either, she could sing along with the "big ones" because everyone recognizes them, whether they're conscious of it or not. Those tunes are so ingrained in our collective consciousness as an American society that everyone's heard Jump, Panama, Love Comes Walking In, etc. It's been spoofed in so many TV shows, so many commercials, so many movies that you can't help but "know it" on some level.
Timster, you don't like Hot for Teacher, and you don't think Chris Farely is funny...I'm really starting to wonder about you, man....are you a humorless homosexual? ...not that there's anything wrong with the latter....:)
Nope, VH with both Dave and Sammy for the win...hands down..nothing else listed even comes close....Aerosmith deserves honorable mention for reason I cited earlier and above.....ZZ Top should have at least been mentioned by someone; so, I'll mention them too...ZZ Top....love me some ZZ...not "the best American band of all time" but definitely a great American band.
