Posting covers - do you guys actually get permission when you post covers on Sound Cloud. For example MICHEALSTEELE posted 'We Can Work It Out' Did he call up Paul or George and get permission? \:\) So do you guys just post and hope that it doesn't get taken down?

i changed the names of my cover tunes so they wouldn't be so obvious.

getting permissions would involve paying money for the rights.
no senses paying for this if that's non-profit and just for fun.

Webster, can you give me an example of how much the streaming rights are for a typical cover song (if there is such a thing)

This was for a song titled "Daisy" by Stone Temple Pilots. It appears that 100 streams cost $17.00 (I payed for another song titled "Life By The Drop" by Doyle Bramhall and it was the same price):

So if it gets streamed 100 times, do they take it down until you re-up with Harry Fox?

Oh, okay. I looked at the Harry Fox site. That stuff is not very easy to understand. I think I'll just listen to my covers in private then. \:\)

I can't comment with any authority or certainty - just with what I think I understand about this.

It seems that it is on an "honor" system. My guess is that in the extremely unlikely event that your cover of a song on Soundcloud is discovered by the author/composer/writer (or some other entity that wants to make a big deal out of it) - they would contact Soundcloud and have it blocked or removed. The odds of this seem preposterous, in my view.

Not unlike the millions of unlicensed songs on youtube. Only the artists that really care, or really feel hurt, or that get a lot of attention.... are the ones that youtube will get notified about to take something down.

I have no idea - but I'm pretty sure Soundcloud is not "policing" this sort of thing.

In my view - in most cases - you're not going to get into any "trouble" for not paying for the licensing. Nobody will ever know. For me, I just feel better about being honest and doing the right thing. I've become a bit of a dudley doright in that sense.

if you are going to post at soundcloud,
leave it up til you are close to 100 plays or downloads,
take the song down, put it back up with a slightly different title,
starts the count over.

or sumptin'.

Thanks. I'll try to remember that for when I might have a song worthy of 100+ plays.

when you post covers at soundcloud you need to make it
perfectly clear that that is what it is. a cover.

example: We Can Work It Out (COVER) i ALWAYS follow
the title with (COVER).

in the song description: my cover of We Can Work It Out
by the Beatles. writers: Lennon and McCartney.

when i post covers i'm not selling them or making profits
of any kind. i'm just recording songs that i grew up with
and learned to play from. and putting them out there for
people to listen to. i've posted nearly 40 tunes at soundcloud
in the past few years and have never had one pulled.

What ever happened to the impending SoundCloud bankruptcy that was all the chatter a few years ago?
