Hey guys I just wanted to drop a line and ask if there is any particular microphones that you guys would recommend to run with a vs 1824? A decent vocal mic maybe in the $400 range. I know everybody praises Neumann, and I've heard Graham talk about the behringer I think it was or something on YouTube. Anybody have any recommendations? Right now I'm using those lousy sterlings but it's better than nothing. Again, thank you in advance.

Hi there, N.

Within the last six months there’ve been several threads on the forum that address microphone selection. You may want to check those out for ideas. Thank you’ll find them useful.

Good luck!

Hi,

The only 1824-related recommendation i have is:

Avoid quiet microphones, that is: mics that need much amplification from the Roland VS machine's preamps. The preamps tend to hiss when cranked.

Or should i say: if you want to use quiet mics (ribbon mics, Shure SM7, ...), use an external preamp and feed THIS to the VS machine, leaving the Roland input gains between 7 and 9 o'clock.

i've used the mxl 990 - you can get it in a kit for about 120 usd
MXL 990/991 Recording Microphone Package and XLR Cables

works pretty well, phantom powered condensor mics.

Ok, sounds great. I've been using the Sterling and running it through a Art preamp. Just not getting the quality I want. I mean, it's not bad but I've found out it picks up every little sound, even if your breathing to heavy.

If you're picking up so much background sound, you must be using a condenser mic. Try using a dynamic mic, like sm57 or 58, through your preamp. Many people prefer a dynamic mic and preamp for vocals and the dynamic will pick up far less background.

If using a condenser, you probably also need a sound-treated booth or room, with little to no background sound. A condenser will even pickup and amplify sound coming from other rooms and above the ceiling.

58's are cheap and on many a hit song. Just get a "good enough" pre amp.
