Does the VS1680 have to do incremental firmware updates?

I'm just trying to upgrade one of the VS1680 machines I've bought. The firmware on one of them is 1.01, believe it or not. I've tried using 2.024 and 2.5 using the SMF Player and I can see that midi is being sent from the computer, but the poor VS1680 jut sits there displaying 'waiting for sysex' and the counters never advance from 000000. I'm pretty sure that with the V1680 you couldn't jump certain firmware updates....they had to be incremental. Am I remembering correctly and if so, has anybody got the old versions because I can't find them anywhere on the internet. It could be , the USB to midi lead I'm using isn't working with this computer, but it worked fine when going from the VS1680 to Presonus Studio One yesterday, when I transfered some stuff via SPDIF.

I would certainly consider and try at least another midi cable first. If you're using midi through usb, it's certainly possible that the 1680 doesn't like it - I've known people to switch to whatever cheap midi cable alternative they can find and it turns out to work for them. Sometimes, the midi cable pairs are labeled backwards, if that's what you have, so you might try using the other cable.
Your best bet would be to use a computer that has midi with a pci interface, like the m-audio midisport, or possibly a usb audio interface that has midi, like the focusrite scarlet series.
It's possible, I suppose that the 1680 needs to be updated past the v-xpanded version first, before it will load the 2.024 or 2.5? Maybe you can find somebody that has the v-xpanded zip disk?? I will see what I have, but I wouldn't know how to get a copy of it to you, whatever I might have.... I'll follow your progress in the meantime and hope you find an easy solution - wow! 1.01 - wow!

I know it's a long time ago, but I remember buying the ZIP \expanded version...it was a no-brainer at £49, effectively giving you another two tracks and I'm sure there was something about consecutive updates...though I've owned that much gear I'm not sure now. I'm getting a Focusrite Scarlett 186i delivered next week...another no-brainer, brand new unit for £70 inc P&P. That will sort out the SPDIF and the midi. I've just fitted a Compact Flash adaptor that I used on a Yamaha AW4416. It has a 32Gb card with it, and the VS1680 has just formatted the maximum number of partitions to it (8 x 2.1Gb). I've just tried copying via SPDIF between two machines, an 8 track song, 2 tracks at a time and it was interesting to see the two 'hard disk' activity lights. On the machine with the hard drive, the light was flickering every half second. The Compact Flash unit lit about every 5 seconds......so if the data is secure....it might be a result. It would also make ripping WAVs from a CF card easier. Fun times....

Thanks uptildawn....if you have the old midifile updates, it would be easy enough to send them as emaik...the files are tiny, a few Mb at the most. I might give Roland UK a ring on Monday and see if they can help. Cheers Al

I managed to sort this out. I picked up a Focusrite Scarlett 18i6 (brand new) for a song and it fed the VS the midi files, no problem. If anyone else picks up a new unit and tries the Mix Control software on Focusrite's site.....do yourself a favour and check a little utility in the download called 'UPDter'. I spent hours trying to install it, with even a 'live chat' with FOcusrite who sent me a 'beta' version that still didn't work. It was only the next morning that I saw the file in the download and tried it. Hey presto, worked immediately. Onwards and upwards.
