I agree. China wasn't too bad either. As usual, his most famous stuff, like Chariots Of Fire didn't do much for me. The guy didn't have the chops of a Wakeman or Emerson, Vangelis had a gift of constructing interesting tunes using simple melody. Neat percussion stuff as well.

Jon and Vangelis had collaborated on Vangelis 1975 album "Heaven and Hell", that's 6 years before "The Friends of Mr. Cairo", which i quite enjoyed btw. i *think* he plays on Jon Anderson 1976 first solo album: "Olias of Sunhillow". an excellent album, btw.
he's credited on Jon's album for "inspiration", if i recall. and nothing else. they were on different labels, so, contractual obligations and such...
but that definitely is Vangelis' sound behind this. no doubt about it.
we'll probably never know for sure. but i'd bet a small fortune that it's him playing the keyboards. or at the very least, his keyboards were being used with his patches/presets. and with him not too far behind !
he was rumored at the times to join Yes as a keyboard player.
In high school I went to a laser show at a planetarium. One of the songs was "The Spiral" (I think) by Vangelis. Another was Karn Evil #9 part 2 by ELP. I have vivid memories of both of those.
