Well, I might as well add some length to this thread as well! ;\) And I see my reply pushed this thread to 9 pages! \:D

Hano, the CD is officially in the hands of the United States Postal Service, complete with the "Free Gift" customs sticker on it!

I did my preliminary mix last night. It's pretty straight-forward, the kind I would do for a band that wanted a "sounds live" mix, the only serious fader moves for lead guitar (to open some space for the vocals).

Now, how can I twist & turn it.

It's a working one: Hurray

I have just recovered the CD at 20X speed succesfully, I didn't even know it could do that soo fast, and I started listening to all the tracks ... So far I checked every drum track, I played around with some inserts, and tried some intensive EQ, pannings, back to mono ... Track sheet was not fully correct, but I have taken notes .. Friday evening I'll be home alone, so I'll have time to work it til very late ...

I'm just typing this, so you guys know I have taken a first REAL listen, and it pleases me so far ... lot's of low in there ..

I'm stil getting some new ideas as I type. I just have to let it sink in. It's not going to be an easy mix with 6 tracks. I might have to submix it down to Pro-tools, plan it, .. , I even thought for a moment I could re-record it in MT1 as a new song, so I can mix it better .. not sure yet .. I'll sleep over it first ...
More later ...

Hi, here is a minor update,

So far I have made a first digital mix into my Mac. In the mix I have added a modified version of "GT: Acoustic" as Inserts on the drums, and all the other instruments got various degrees of "RV:Small room", with different panning placements.

I have used intensive 3-band EQ on Bass and rythem guitar, and I took out 6Db at 600Hz from the lead guitar. So far it sounds pretty good.

I have also tried to re-mix Hooks drums, and when I checked, and compared his mixdown to mine, I decided to go for his mixed drum tracks. His was simply better done than mine, so I'm working further from Hooks drum mix.

It's an open mix now, and I can hear all the instruments separated and well now. My wife doesn't like the song that much, but she likes the mix so far. I always ask her for a second opinion, when I'm about to close down and save.

I have recorded the 6 mixed tracks (on my Mac) back into my VS880EX. All digital. Coax cables.
On those two last tracks I have now inserted a home-made MTK Pre-Master patch. It pumps the mix up, in all the dynamics that happen.

It's only now that I realise how good the MTK's really sound. They start shining when you work in MASS mode. That FX card works in 24 bit, and it's only now, that it reveils me it's real power. I had never recorded in MASS mode myself.
I'm learning a lot about sound definition now.

It was pretty hard to make a good balance due to the high amounth of low end that cluttered up my first initial balances.

Tomorrow I will be lining up the keyboards in the mix. I hope you've enjoyed the reading.

Have a nice day,

Hano

I've got a mix I'd like to share. Where can I post an mp3? (My mp3.com site has a 3 week wait).

maX,
If you can, please send me an audio CD of your mix. I'm hoping to put them all on one CD and post them as mp3's.

If you want, you can upload your .wav file the same way you got the song data files from my FTP server.

Hi,

Here it's 2AM in the morning, and I am burning a CD for the moment with two mixed versions on it. The first one on the CD I have Pre-Mastered.
The second version is the final Mix without the Pre-Mastering.

I have had problems, and I was able to solve them thanks to my Mac. In MASS mode you just can't bounce very much INTERNAL and in stereo.

So I mixed down six track to the Mac, and re-recorded them onto the VS880EX. Then I added the keyboards, and went back to the Mac. From the Mac I recorded back into my VS, and then I inserted a Pre-Master patch, and bounced internally to what will be found as song 1 on the audio CD .. Man I'm tired now .. ;\)

I was only wondering to who I have to send it now ?

If I would know more about FPT, I could transer it, after I made them into to WAV files.

Des -- I think I'll mail you the files on CD. Would you rather data files (wav) or a music CD?

I'm also working on my 2nd (re)mix. This one's not going to be a conventional mix. I'm going to slice 'n dice & do some (relatively) extreme fx.

So I'll send you all the versions on 1 cd.

I'm also intrigued by Hano's idea about sending a mix that isn't "mastered." I think I'll send the various mixes and also my attempt at mastering them, to give some flexibility for someone to do a consistant mastering of all the versions.

Also, I played my mix for the blues/rock band I'm recording and they whipped out a version too, that I'll send along.

This has been a learning experience. For one, I've never tracked/mixed a kick drum with such a high frequency emphasis as Hook used. My first reaction was to cut the highs to give more space for the other instruments and get my typical thump/whump kick sound going. I did end up re-equing the high end, but the final track still had a pronounced high end and I like it.
I also wouldn't typically have the rhythm guitar follow the bass line, but that's interesting too. And I ended up using the fx version of the bass track with a few eq tweaks and a tad more compression.

Can't wait to hear all the other mixes.

How many are mixing the song? Hano, Des, Hook, me.
Mike, Ryan -- others?

Hey Guys,
I'm hoping to get a mix sent to Des also.. I know Ryan's going to do the instrumental thing for kicks... So I'll do a more traditional thing.

It's been great following this thread and getting the chance to contribute the rthymn guitar track. Thanks so much!

I think I'll have 1 mix done tonight...I might try some "alternative" mixes if I have time, but the first one will be a "traditional" mix.

Hano,
I thought the mix was pretty good, not really anything I would change. It sounds similar to what I get when I do a volume/verb mix then shoot it to the computer for some overall EQ and Compression with a little tube warmth. Is that the process you used? There's definition yet it's all together if that makes sense to you. I hopefully might get a chance Saturday after the buckeye game of course, \:\) to start mixing. Just started my senior year of college, so I'm a little busier than usual, but I have to make time I really want to do this.

Forgive me for not reading all eight pages, but I would love an update, on the lines of who wrote it, who performed on it, who actually mixed it and when can the rest of the Planet hear it \:D

This is not the first time someone has suggested this, but I am pretty sure that this is the first one that has worked. Congrats!

Delso,

Good idea...

  • maX - Author of the song, Keyboards
  • Role65 - Lead Guitar
  • MT1865 - Vocals
  • Des - Bass
  • VKTIM - Rhythm Guitar
  • Hook - Drums
  • Hano - "Official" Mix

I think each of us is going to do our own mix, but Hano's will be the one we post in the MP3 forum. I think Hano is working on remixing his version, so hopefully we'll have it available soon!

Great stuff, can't wait.

My collaborations have been limited to one other Planeteer - so far!

Wawazzat remixed and burned "From a Train" for a Comp CD for me, in the days when I had a VS840.

E Beau laid down some fantastic pedal steel on "Alberta!"

Mevv sent me a song - "She Lies" - to work on, but I couldn't improve it!

I intend to post some lyrics on my page soon and invite Planeteers to add choons, so that may spark something - general nausea, probably!

Thought I'd bring this to the forefront lads.

Hook turned me onto the tune with a mix that he had done and I played it on the radio show and the response has been excellent to better than excellent. I wasn't aware of this thread (I rarely get over into this forum since I have an 1880) at the time of scheduling it so I didn't know the history and it appears that I used a Hook mix (sorry Hano \:o - but I had one of your tunes on the show anyway \:\) "How Do you Manage").

For a bunch of guys that have never met and did their parts individually it is truly amazing! When I first listemed to it I could have sworn this was an established band that had been together for some time. When I schedule the songs, I have to put a band name on it that shows up on the Live365 play window (most often just from the Artist site), so I called this band "880 Musical Chain Letter". Hope ya don't mind. \:\)

If you have any other "Musical chain letters" - let me know by email at silversmith@vsplanet.com. It was quite cool and is a good example of the the "Power of the Planet" (also not a bad name for a band ;\) )
