The Dream
This is something I’ve wanted to do since I first found this board over three years ago. I would love to put together a song. This song would be created by VS users from around the world. Each user could add their “instrument of choice” to the song. Think of it as a musical chain letter. For example, we could start with some drums. Then, pass it along to a bass player, then to a guitarist, etc. Not only would this be a unique experience showcasing the power of home recording with a VS, but imagine what a unique musical experience it would be as well! There would be no boundaries on the style or feel of the song. We could each put our own “stamp” on it. As the finale, we could submit to the next VS Compilation CD.

The Reality
This is how I imagine this process might work. I know that not all of you have the tools to do this, but if you do, let’s talk. To participate, you would need a VS880EX (or similar model), an external SCSI drive and a PC with a CD burner. If you have this, read on…

First, a drummer would record about a 4-minute song. Tempo and style totally up to him. He/she would then “song copy” this to an external SCSI hooked up to the VS. Then, hooking up this drive to the PC, he/she could burn a disc of the VS files to be passed on to the bass player. That would be me. I would lay a bass line over the drums and repeat the same process the drummer did. Then, my CD (now with drums and bass) would be passed on to the next musician. We could continue this until we have a complete song. The CD would come back to me for mixing and mastering and voila! We now have a collaborative effort by people all over the world that we’ve never met.

The Pitch
If this sounds like something you would like to be part of, please email me at tjdesmond@hotmail.com. I will be the virtual producer for this project, as well as the bass player. There are only a few procedures we’d have to follow. For example, it would be difficult to build this song by recording anything but the drums first. Please try to contact me in the next 2 weeks. In your email please let me know which instrument you would like to play. In about two weeks, I’ll send an email to all of those that want to do this and we’ll start.

Damn. I play bass.
So were you thinking of audio or data? Sounds like you mean audio.

No worries. If there is enough interest, we might be able to do 2 songs. Let's see how it goes and I'll contact you.

The passing of the CD would have to be in the VS file format, so I mean data. Does that make sense?

Sure -- count me in. I'm a mediocre guitarist/bassist/singer/keyboardist but pretty good at lyrics.

Another way to start the chain would be with rhythm guitar, if the guitarist plays to a click track: maybe have a click track plus guitar as a first stereo track, then the drummer who gets the 1st cd can wipe the click and add drums?

also, you might want to get the cd back after each pass & post an mp3, or have the last person post an mp3 file to see who's interested in the next block.

You can check out a few tunes at mp3.com. I had about 20 when they cut to three.

Why wouldn't one just do a CD backup directly to their VSCDR or plextor equivalent? Am I missing something here? Why the extra step? I don't see working with files as any advantage, but backups are efficient. Correct?

It would be easier to do a backup to a CD with Roland's CD burner. However, I have stated from day one that I refused to purchase that device from Roland when it was so hideously over priced. Therefore, I do not own one and have no plans to purchase one. I realize this isn't the easiest way, but using a SCSI drive is by far cheaper (and more reliable in my opinion).

So, as I mentioned, I know that not everyone has the hardware to do this the way I proposed it. But, I know there are other folks on the Planet that use an external SCSI like me.

There are many ways, logistically, to accomplish what I'm trying to do. My way is one that works for me and I'm hoping it interests others that do it this way also. Not trying to exclude anyone or make this harder than it has to be, but I'm not bothering with a CD burner on my VS at this point in time.

Hey tjdesmond,

I like this whole idea very much, but I don't have an external SCSI hard drive. (sorry)
I hope your project may see the light of day,
and that you get all the response you dream off.

Thumbs up,

Hano \:\)
It's a great idea, it really is.

Does anyone (of those interested in this project) have both an external SCSI drive and VS-compatable burner? If so, hit me with an email. I have an idea that would allow those that use a VS-compatable burner and the "back up" command to participate in this also...

I have both. Sounds like an interesting idea. I am not sure what I could add. Guitar or Vocal. Better at the vocal. Harmony or lead. Somebody write a good song and send it on it's way. Mike

Thanks to everyone for your interest. I'm talking to Hook about the logistics of making this happen. I think this is a great opportunity to do something unique. I will be in touch with everyone when we have a process nailed down.

We're looking at ways to do this for those that have a CD and do song "back ups". I'll keep you informed...

MT1865--Don't have any vocalists yet, we could sure you use you!

Well, we've got ourselves a band! I will be emailing all of you very soon with all the details. We've got a drummer (Hook), bass player (me), guitarist (Role65), keyboardist (maX) and vocalist (mt1865).

Thanks to Hook, You'll be able to send me either a backup CD or a data CD from your SCSI drive.

Details to follow...

Des -- I have an mp3 site where I could post mp3's, but it takes a month before a song gets approved, so that's not a viable option. I could email mp3 attachments, if you've got a fast connection.

That wouldn't work. I can't accept attachments through Hotmail more than 1 mb.

No worries, I'll look forward to hearing your ideas on the audio CD.

Des, who has the song? Could the writer cut a real basic version and send it out to the rest of us. We could then think about the key (pretty important) and our individual parts. I don't know much about posting MP3s on the net, or getting songs on e-mail. I do know cds can be sent via mail. This sounds like a great idea. Mike

Mike,
Absolutely. maX is sending me a rough guitar track. I can make that available to everyone as soon as I get it. He's also got some lyrics to go along with it. I have a place I can post it as an mp3 so folks can download it and listen. Great idea!

Des 'n all -- I been sick the last few days. I did record rough guitar & vox tracks that I'll get in the mail on Monday to Des. I'm also including a cd with VS backup tracks, because I saved them before Des told me he couldn't get to them in that format: he could pass that cd on to someone with a VS cd burner.

Des, If I understood right, you need the back up on 100MB Zip disk. If that is so, send the CD back up to me and I will send you back a 100MB Zip Disk. That would help me also, cause I don't have high speed internet and am not sure if I even know how to download the MP3. At any rate I would very much like to get my hands on the song ASAP. If you want to go that route e-mail me at MT1865@aol.com.......Mike

Guys,
I just sent you an email. Basically, I'm going to wait until I get the scratch tracks and then try and map this thing out. I've got a 7 week-old son at home that's keeping me busy!

Thanks!

Everyone--Please record your instruments as you want them to sound in the final mix. When I mix down, I plan on doing very little tweaking. Maybe a little EQ here or there and some panning, but that's about it. I think your "sound" can be as unique as your performance and I don't want to misrepresent anyone by applying my effects to your performance. I will probably use a preset from the VS patches for mastering, so if any of you guys have had success with mastering on the VS, let me know! I thought about sending it out to get mastered, but it would be cool to do this with mostly VS gear and only VS users...

I know you already have a drummer for this project but I want dibs on the next tune coming out. Unless you guys are looking for percussion tracks... I have Roland V-drums which would work fine.

Drumfeak,
Based on what we've done so far, I think its safe to say we'll have another project in the works soon. I'll keep you in mind.

Hano,
I think I speak for all of us when I say we'd be honored to have you mix this for us. I'll send you details via email. Send me an email at tjdesmond@hotmail.com and I'll send you the details and status of this project.

Thanks!

Hi,

Email has left. Thanks for the honours.
For me it's a real compliment, that I can try to decide how the audio placement of your mutual sounds & efforts will be. ;\)
I might need some detailed track notes.
Most of all for finding all the well used virtual tracks (original tracks).

Hano,
I must say i'm very excited that you are taking so much interest in this. There's certain people on the planet that you specifically want a response from in some of the post, or whose input carries much value. i believe i speak for most teers in saying you are one of those, which i think, increases the integrity and good nature of this project. And Tjdesmond, how you ever thought this up i don't know, pretty intelligent.. The other day i was talking to my dad (planeteer VKTIM) about if we pull this off it could open up a whole new world of how to get other people to work on your projects without having to be your studio. ex i have a song that's needs a drummer instead of waiting till i week or two to find some one, i could send to hook he could put a couple of different tracks down and shoot it back to me! This ould Revolutionize studio session work! Well before i get all worked up just wanted to say this could be one of the collest things i've done "musically" and proud to be aprt of it.
