I understood the SI-24 can be used with several VS-24xx machines, but am wondering if it would also work well with the VSR-880?

The VSR-880 can do many things, but having more direct access to all this would be very welcomed.
I hope this can be done by connecting the SI-24 to it.

(playback levels, pan, EQ and who knows the joystick can be put to use as well)

Any info/experiences?

Thanks!

Hello PTR,
This way you can connect Roland SI24 to Roland VSR880, via R-Bus socket. But you will only have the advantage of being able to use SI24 input preamplifiers only, Volume faders will not work, Pan. EQ etc. you will not be able to use these additions. The inputs will be audible and can be used for recording tracks to the Roland VSR880, only the Gain controls will be active. SI24 preamplifiers work very well, but you will not have 48v phantom power. As I remember, there seems to be phantom power 15v. Roland SI24 in this case is suitable only as a buffer input amplification for XLR microphone inputs and that's it. SI24 will do this job very well. I have a Roland SI24 and a Roland VSR880, the SI24 is lying, good, beautiful and unused, like in a museum. Ah, in addition to the Roland SI24, there is a Roland RPC1 R-Bus Interface sound card for a computer, which is compatible with M-Audio drivers. That's about all I can tell you.

Hi Voxas,

Thanks for sharing those experiences & info. You made it very clear the SI-24 would add very little to the VSR-880 to justify its footprint next to the VSR-880. Too bad but good to know it won't add much w.r.t. controlling the VSR-880.

'Luckily' that SI-24 was already sold, and if another one might pop up I'll skip it.

W.r.t. adding preamps to the VSR-880, the ADA-7000 that I have would also make more sense then I understand.

Thanks/bye

And don't forget one such parameter in digital devices, where these days manufacturers often don't even announce it - what is the internal processing in the device system, because they all can have 24-bit resolution and different sample rates, and for example Roland VS 2480 has 56-bit internal processing. when others are only 32 bit. And the sound is quite different. The higher the internal processing, the better the device sounds, as you can see when you look for the differences. If the digital mixer or sound cards are marked with 32-bit internal processing, it is better to sell them as such. So anyone can say that everything is fine and it sounds great. That might be fine, until you compare the devices next to each other. For example Roland VSR880 internal processing is 40bit. Roland VS2480 - 56bit. Roland OHRCA M-5000 - Internal Processing - 72 bits (fixed point, bus summing). In your case, I even used analog devices, such as a mixer, with direct output from each channel, and I used the Roland VSR880 R-bus connection if I had another VSR880 and connected both devices for synchronization via R-Bus to have 16 channels. Good luck Bro PTR . \:\)
