Oh yes. One friend of mine had a Hondo V. Another had a Randy Rhoads copy with a Kahler and set neck. Nice. My old lead singer had an Aria Pro. Very nice guitar with a low price

My first guitar was a Hondo strat copy. It must have been junky, because my teacher told my parents that I needed a better guitar. That was after my first year of lessons. He wouldn't have said that, unless he really felt that way. Unfortunately, I traded it to get my first amp. I haven't seen it since 1988, but I do remember it being very heavy.
For $1,000, I'd get a used American Performer strat or get on the waiting list for a PRS DGT SE.

That guitar I linked is only $279. I typed "could" when I shoulda typed "would". It has features you'd normally find on a guitar costing 4X as much.
Yeah, Ive played some good Hondos and some bad Hondos as well. The last music store I worked at sold them.
My friend's was white: https://reverb.com/item/5873606-hondo-fo...shell-case-ohsc

RR V's came with a warning sticker:
Caution: This guitar shape is known to put people's eyes out

There were "good" Hondo guitars? Not that I ever touched. All were like boat anchors; heavy, dead, and dull. Looked the part, didn't play or sound the part.

I've played some good ones. They were set up though. The one friend I mentioned with the V, used it as his main guitar for a while.
Yeah the RR is dangerous. My Kramer's shaped like that.

Interesting. I checked out that Reverb listing and that guitar is set neck or neck through. I don't remember ever seeing/playing a Hondo like that.
But yep, a good setup is always key.
FWIW, Hondo was a brand between Samick and IMC, who went on the buy/produce Charvel. Those Charvels were MIJ but the Hondos were MIK, early Korean guitars before they got really good (IMO)....and they did.
IMC was based in Texas, and those Charvels had neck plates that said Charvel USA, even though the necks came with a little sticker that said MIJ. Regardless, those MIJ Charvels were/are really good. I know, I've had 6 of them.
I know Hondo had some guitars made by Tokai in Japan for awhile, but I've never played any of them. Supposedly they were a step up. Of course, Samick went on to be one of the largest producers of guitars in the world. Somewhere along the line Cort was in the picture. IIRC, Cort IS the largest producer of guitars on the planet. Both Cort and Samick make some really good guitars these days (under whatever brands).
I had a Samick Greg Bennett jazz box for awhile and it far belied it's price tag. I just rarely played it so I sold it after awhile, but it was a good guitar.

I've played some nice Cort guitars too. I know they made signature Gene Simmons models for a while. The Ax and the other one he played. Forgot what it was called.

Cort makes OEM guitars for many brands, like Schecter, Jackson, Ibanez, PRS SE, some Fenders, G&L, and more I'm sure. Basically, and of those brands that are made in Indonesia, which has really upped their guitar making game and made some great guitars.
I'm not sure about ESP/LTD. Most such manufacturers make guitars all over Asia, like Korea and Indonesia....and, of course, China. It seems the higher end of brands are made in Korea, but Indonesia is catching up.

As a non-guitarist I’m tempted. I have a cheap Takamine acoustic and don’t practice nearly enough. My fingers get sore after 10 or 15 minutes. I might make more progress with lighter strings on an electric.

Fantastic! I hope you get a good one.
Xeno, it has a zero fret. So, I'm thinking you can get the action VERY low on that guitar.

So, aside from a fixable wonky volume knob, what's the verdict? Would you recommend it as an entry-level model for a guitar noob with wussy-soft fingertips?
Adam says it has a "zero fret," and I don't even know what that means. I do understand that a "low action" means it should be easy on the fingers.

But give me a couple of days with it first before I really set that in stone. Meanwhile I really ought to take my Takamine to the tech at the music store and see if they can adjust the action to make it a little easier to play. But it's a $200 beginner's guitar, and I don't know if much can be done to improve it.
Maybe I should just practice more? Nah! I want to be Tommy Emmanuel over night.

If it played okay before, it probably just needs a tiny turn of the truss rod. Why pay someone to use a hex wrench on your guitar?

Have you tried a lighter gauge of strings? That will be easier on your fingers.

Well, I just had a 90 minute practice session, rotating between this guitar and my Martin SC-10E (gig on Sunday). It sure is nice and light, and easy on the fingers.
I still have this problem with not being sure where I am on the neck… like I did with the headless Carvin I bought several years ago. However, I'm gonna give this about four or five days to see if I can get used to it. The smelly one says that's what it takes.

Looks nice. I never owned a headless guitar. But 1 of my bass players swore by Steinberger. He played both their basses and guitars and wouldnt play anything else.
a zero fret is the fret right under the top nut. The top nut is only used to set the distance between the strings and the strings rest on the zero fret, resulting in low action.

Which reminds me.... remember Hondo and Aria Pro?
After reading some of this thread, I became interested a bit, especially after I learned that Hondo manufactured some "Warlock body style" guitars. While I was on Ebay, I happened to notice this headless bass that had some similarities to the guitar that was pictured in other posts to this thread:

I remember those. They sold for a lot cheaper if I remember right. A little over $100 I think. Hohner made great copies as well. I played one. I almost bought it.

Another thing that was brought to my attention is that the frets on this guitar (stainless steel!) are rounded on the ends, and don't quite extend to the edge of the fretboard. So no fret sprout! Or if there is, the fret edges aren't sharp.

Looks like you have the ball ends at the headstock end and you wind it at the bridge. Here's a similar guitar.

For the music I play, it doesn't matter where I am on the neck.
