I’m kind of surprised our govt is saying they had to search a 10-square-mile patch of ocean for the debris. I’m sure there were enough eyes on it that they could pinpoint exactly where it fell. I wonder why they couldn’t somehow sever the balloon and scoop up the electronics instead of shoot it down, considering the aerobatics we are capable of.

I thought the same but possibly it had a self destruct mechanism.

60K feet is quite a drop. At that height, the impact even on water is probably like concrete.

(if balloon annoying! Shoot it down, replace batteries and continue to watch great weather)

Wondered a couple of days ago if Xi could’ve had the balloon impregnated with microbes, harmful chemicals, or any other environmental poisons that could wreak havoc to our waters, air, land, or population. Besides spying, the balloon could be used as a vehicle for other strategic purposes... knowing that we at some point would likely blow it up.
