It's not all that clever - Bear has been doing/advocating this for freakin' years. He has also published his results.

Some of you guys around here don't have a fucking clue as to what your talking about. Try doing a search for some information from time to time, you just might learn something instead of making a fool of yourself. Credit where credit is due. That's A wee bit strong me thinks - the last sentence would have been suffice.
I'll post again later ... about 2009 after I have read every post on this BBS.

Easy, there, fellas....
So far as I know:
FalconEddy uncovered the Input Distortion problem, and discovered "The Crank" procedure to temporarily resolve the issue.
I don't know WHO first performed "The Fix", prolly some engineer at Roland, kicking themselves for omitting a dollars worth of components from the PCBoard. The circuit in question was copied intact from the A/D chip manufacturer's data sheet, except for the two resistors that were mistakenly omitted from each channel. OOPS.
BearM first performed the and documented the OpAmpMod. But others had performed a similar mod in other Roland gear, so there was not much new ground here. Somebody had to be first, and AFAIK it was BearM.
We had known about the extra connector spot on the 2480HD, but I think Our New Tech Dweil was the first to actually populate and test it. Cool beans.
And Dweil is the first I know of to modify a 2480HD to include a DVD tray, and not a dang laptop tray, but a decent internal IDE tray. Pretty cool.
But a lot of that is old history, and we don't make folks pass a test when they sign up, so it may look new to them.
Like, how many people think the "Big Yellow Taxi" song is only a year or two old?

Let's remember that in his first post, Dweil specifically stated that he did not come up with these mods himself:
On the internet there are a number of mods out for this mixer:
1) The channel distortion mod. Roland does this modification for free, but it probably cost 10 times more on shipping costs than the 32 resistors of 1 meg. So, this has to be done.
2) Pre-amp modification. Burr-Brown makes some excellent opamps, but Roland made a big mistake by not putting those in their VS-2480. I am retro-fitting these high quality opamps.
3) Upgrading the harddrive to 120GB.
So far, nothing out of the ordinary.
The two things he did (and states) that are new are the internal-DVD upgrade for the 2480HD and the R-Bus->TDIF converter.

If you give a man a fish you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish youfeed him for a lifetime. I personally think we should thank Dweil, Bearm, Karl, Brett,Dot,Kid Surf,Brad and too many others to mention for teaching the rest of us to fish.

I'm considering having the Op-amp mod done to my beloved VS2480. I called the local Roland authorized service center to see if they had a soldering whiz who would do the mod for me. They told me they wouldn't do the mod because they could lose their Roland certification. I asked if they could recommend someone else in town and they said they wouldn't recommend anyone and I was a fool for even thinking about it.
Any thoughts on how to find a local soldering god?

Have the authorized roland service center ship it to roland's soldering gods? Roland pays for shipping and fixes it for free. Just call Roland for an "RA" (Roland Authorization) number and have the service center ship it to them in LA.
I found a soldering god by looking for a refurbished PC Tower in my local paper. He refurbs PCs and has helped me with installs and upgrading to DVD and he solders like a mad man. Good Luck.

I thought Roland fixed the distortion problem by soldering all of these Op-amps in? If not, what do the solder in to fix the distortion problem?

Frank.... the fix is just a couple of resistors on each cahnnel...to quote the great man himself(Lakestone Karl)...." I don't know WHO first performed "The Fix", prolly some engineer at Roland, kicking themselves for omitting a dollars worth of components from the PCBoard. The circuit in question was copied intact from the A/D chip manufacturer's data sheet, except for the two resistors that were mistakenly omitted from each channel. OOPS."

Hi all, It has been a while... Lots of changes, have relocated from Jamaica to Arizona. Have been reading a lot. Everything sounds great. I am blowing the dust off of the VS, Menges can you put me in line for some soldering assistance? Dweil, how is the RBUS to TDIF conversion going?
Best of the New Year to all!!!

posted 12-12-2005 10:27 AM I will make some more pictures as soon as I've got the 34 SMD opamps here. Then the whole mixer has to be opened up again and I'll make some pics.
I heard 16 opamps for inputs, and 2 for headphones. what are the other 16 opamps for?

Wow, great thread! Sounds like some worthwhile mods... Is the pre's sound quality difference that huge after the op-amp mod??
