If you could take pics as you go along, pics of what you are doing each step, that would really be cool.

If you're referring to an audio-DVD the answer is no. The DVD drive can only be used to backup and restore projects, import WAV files from either CD-R or DVD-R, export WAV files to CD-R (not DVD-R) and burn audio CD-Rs (at 44.1k).

But you can ofcourse export 96k WAV files to CD-R, you just won't be able to play them on a CD player.

Thanks Arjan, not an upgrade I need to do then. Quite happy with backing up to CDR.

I'd be surprised (although delighted) if the RBUS to TDIF converter works. You could figure out which pin receives information when a particular input/output is used, but it's more than that. Even though we all talk physically out of our mouths, the languages between two people could be completely different.

Hey Dweil--
When you get done here, pop over to the VS-2400 forum and see what you can do for us--like a DVD mod or adding a SCSI port! ;\)

1) The channel distortion mod. Roland does this modification for free, but it probably cost 10 times more on shipping costs than the 32 resistors of 1 meg. So, this has to be done.

2) Pre-amp modification. Burr-Brown makes some excellent opamps, but Roland made a big mistake by not putting those in their VS-2480. I am retro-fitting these high quality opamps.
I contacted the boys and decided to let them do these two mods.

As I am told, mod 2 improves the recorded sound quality big time.

I will post the results as soon the modification is made. But don't hold youw breath, can be next year.

If you take your VS2480 to a Roland Authorized Service Center, the FIX+Shipping is FREE. Call Roland for an RA number then with that number in hand, and if you ran the test on Brett's site take that info too and have the sevice center either fix or ship it to Roland if they can't! All will be paid for on the FIX if it's for the harmonic distortion problem.

Shure thing Frank, but in holland it will take 5 to 8 weeks before Roland has got the box returned to the service center. That's just not acceptable.

Beside's that, the boys are putting Burr-Brown opamps in the box.

Burr-Brown ? your asking ?

Take a look here and note the THD

No, in fact with the Burr-Brown OpAmp mod it will be top of the line. Imagine a $ 1500 Valve OpAmp. And that times 16.

Mine was back in two weeks. When you ask them they (used to) say 1-2 weeks for the fix. But perhaps this has changed because Roland Benelux is now also responsible for France and their workload has increased considerably I believe.

I have no idea what's good or bad in those OpAmp's so I guess 16 times is good?
At least better than it was befor the fix?

What about us keep-us-away-from-soldering-irons-at-all-costs types?

Are there clear and easy plans for this that a local repair shop could use to do the mod?

Any idea of the cost?

Thanks.

Also obviously you would lose your 3 year roland guarantee if you did these mods. Which for me would have been very bad as the motherboard in my VS2480 died within a year!

Hello all. I just want to let you know, I did the "Fix", and opamp upgrade this weekend, and it was not hard at all. I used the tutorials from the net, and with a 10dollar tool to remove the solder, had no problems. I ordered parts from Digi key, and the sockets from Radioshack, had parts here in a few days. I bought a few too many sockets, and extra opamps just incase, so if anybody need extra parts email me at fngrstck@alltel.net. Also if anybody wants it done, i'll provide the service. I'm in the Cleveland Oh area.

I just got an Yamaha O2R here for testing the R-Bus -> T-Dif converter. I've taken a quick look at the O2R's expansion boards, and now I'm even more confident that it's gonna work one way or another. maybe not THAT simple as I suggested, but I'll take some measurements with the oscilloscope tomorrow.. stay tuned...

5) The R-Bus to T-Dif converter works after a bit of tinkering. I will be selling these converters on my website very soon, after I did some more testing of course. This was just a quick initial testing, but the basics are there! This concludes the entire modification of the VS-2480. Everything I wanted to achieve, worked very well. Now, I still have an O2R over here, and it sounds terrible, compared to this 2480!

Let's modify... \:\)

Just wondered how on earth a single $2 IC can sound as good as $1500 Valve pre-amp(you meant pre amp didnt you?)?

I agree with eggwheat. If they would rival a 1500 valve amp, I think the opamps would cost 1500$!!! They make the inputs clearer, cleaner, and to me a little more presence, especially at lower gains.

eggwheat, Menges,

It is a Pre-Amp modification done with the OpAmp from Burr-Brown. I know the reputation of this OpAmp from other gear. I just hope that the results for the VS2480 are the same, and with that in mind it can indeed compete with a verry expensive Valve pre-amp.

Said that,

To compare a single $2 IC with a $1500 Valve pre-amp is actually not realistic. The cost price of a IC can be that low because they are making lots of them.

It was just clever thinking of Dweil to implement the Burr-Brown in the Pre-Amp stage of the VS2480.
