Hi all,

I found out, that it's possible to combine compressor and expander to a compander, like 2480 users can do. \:\)
So far so good - it is working excellent, but when you store the project and recall it again,
then the expander-function doesn't open the channel - its like a muted channel. \:\(
You can repair this by switching back to compressor or expander and reactivate the compander.

I never found this funktion in a 2400-document.

Does anybody know more about it?
Was it a test for a next software release that might come - will it come? Or a relict from 2480, that migth be removed in a further release?

If there is more interest, I'll describe the steps to do, next time (rather complicted with my English-knowledge).

I would be very interested in hearing about this.

I'll make due with your English. ;-)

hey, lot of funny people here. I think you're kidding. But if you really don't know a compander: VS-2480_OM.pdf page 158 \:\)

At the 2400 you can switch to compander only with VGA monitor. There in the DYN screen, where you can switch by mouse only between compressor and expander. If you then turn the value dial in both directions, you can also switch between COMP and EXP by turning. Then turn on and on ... and look what you will see ... and possibly hear ;\)

Fine when it's useful for you.
Everybody who paid for it, shall it know ... ;\) .

I only wonder, that nobody before discovered this. Perhaps it's because I'm more an engineer then a musician \:\(

I think that there is so much to learn already, plus there is no documentation for this, plus it is only on the VGA, plus it cannot be done using the mouse.

In other words, its just not obvious, and I suspect that it was not intended to be implemented in the 2400 at all.

I'll say this much, though: I will be careful with any future OS updates! Don't want to lose any cool features like this!

Yes that's right. Also the fact that you can't really store it - or is this possible for you?

If, so I'd be interested what your version is.

Your considerations to the OS updates concern me in the same way. Don't know if a downgrade to any older OS then would be possible ...

Just as an afterthought,

Given that the machine has this potential and the ability to save that state being purely software. Rather than speculating as to what Roland's intentions are why don't we as a community petition Roland as a user group to just "officialy" enable the option.

Cool send an email to roland@vsplanet.com politely asking for this feature to become fully integrated into the non VGA mode and that it be allowed to be saved. As a software engineer myself I can see that this is only a software limitation.

I'm curious about it, if and when they will answer.
I'm also sharing Krontabs opinion. Maybe (if Roland is clever) there is only one source for the VS2480/2400-software, differed by precompiler switches or different header files ...

I couldn't get the compressor to work WITH the expander. The screen shows up with both but just the expander meter shows it's working.

Also, do you guys get some message that comes up before it gives you access to it. some message about the audio?

Yes, there's a message that says, that the dynamics on the other channels won't work with start of compander.
If you are in a REC-cannel this will be the inputs - if in an INP-channel the dynamics of REC-channels will be switched off.
I could describe it better if I were sitting in front of my VS2400, but here at work ... ;\)
Try it, you can't damage it by switching around.

sorry ryguy,
didn't understand your problem yesterday.
Maybe that's the problem with storing and restoring of a project using companders.
Perhaps it works again, when you switch back to one function alone and then again to compander.
But as I know, nothing worked in this case, the expander (of the compander) closed the channel completely.
New problem ? \:\( ?

The function of the combination is the same for the 2480. If both are enabled for the input then you have to sacrifice track mixer dynamic processing or vise a versa.

Well I'll be buggered....

Select with the mouse and wheel down until both red squares disappear.

Appears that to run both the Compressor and Expander together, it nicks DSP from the equivalent Input channel's compressor section eg. you can't have the compressor or expander running on Input 1 if Channel 1's got COMP+EXP.

Cheers, Ben.
