Protools=Master, VS= Slave
Protools Settings: 1. Setup/Peripherals/Synchronization, set MTC Generator Port to the MIDI port going to the VS 2. Under VIEW/TRANSPORT, make sure you have Synchronization checked so it will show on your transport. 3. On your transport, Click GEN MTC so Protools will send MTC to the VS for sync
VS Settings: 1. Connect a MIDI cable from the DIGI MIDI OUT to the VS MIDI IN 2. Set your VS to to EXT Sync on the Sync page 3. Set its source to MIDI IN 4. Hit PLAY on the VS, it wont work if you dont
VS=Master, Protools=Slave
VS Settings: 1. Utility/Sync=INT 2. Midi Out SYNC GEN = MTC 3. Make sure your FRAME RATE is the SAME on Protools and VS 30,29D,29ND etc 4. Connect the MIDI out cable on the VS to Protools DIGI MIDI IN
Protools Settings: 1. Setup/Peripherals/Synchronization, MTC Reader Port= MIDI port coming from the VS 2. On the Transport in Protools, click the most left button that looks like a clock to set Protools to Waiting On Sync, it will start blinking

I just got Pro Tools M-Powered and am going to try to use my VS 1680 as a patchbay of sorts, and the transport controls, via Midi. If anyone has any suggestions on making this work please post here. I will report back here after Christmas festivities are over and I have a week off from work to learn my new Pro Tools system.
Again, anyone who has made effective use of their VS with pro tools: your input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Russell

someone with your professionalism and expertise is a great source but unfortunately there are some of us that are not musically/technically educated like you. Is there a simpler way or maybe a video of you explaining taking it step by step for me to use my vs2480 with a digi rack and if so specify which one (digirack) would work best I would buy it QUICK!

To all, I dont have a VS2480 now nor a DIGI Rack so the instructions I gave are it. You can use the DIGI002Rack or 003Rack, they are the same in regards to this setup.

Hi, This thread has helped me tremendously...one question however, does it matter what Digi audio interface is used (ie MBox 2, MBox Pro or MBox mini)?

Doesnt matter as long as you have your MIDI connected up in both directions. I used a DIGI002rack and a MOTU MTPAV for the midi here.

Thats what you just got. Use the MIDI ONE port on the DIGI Use the SAME midi in and out port on your DIGI Rack, 002 or 003 are the SAME

There was post from Dudydudydudy back on 8.5.09 on this thread under the Pro Tools thread and to post here in case someone is monitoring.
He posted: "hi there tried all those settings and when I click the spacer bar on protools to start record it pauses a second then it starts one hour ahead. "
I'm having this issue when syncing with my VS2480. When I start the play back from the beginning of the song in Pro Tools the VS 2480 waits about 2 seconds then it starts to follow on 00h:00m:00s:29f:023 rather than 00:00:00:00. Makes sense?
Basically I would like both Pro Tools and the VS to start at the same time or is there a way to change the measure below the 00:00:00:00 on either the VS or Pro tools?
Your knowledge is appreciated Dj

Midi is slow to respond. It requires a good few measures to really lock in and sync. You should set up a few measures of offset for the two machines to get lined up before playing tracks.... In other words, it's best if your session tracks begin a few measures beyond zero on the timeline.
Others will maybe have a more defined response than I do. I'm not relying on Midi much, so I don't recall details about it.

Hi Uptildawn
I think you hit it on the nail. I have been searching on the VS on how to change the measures below Zero or on Pro tools. Would you know where the settings are? What do you recommend using besides midi to sync the two?

I believe midi is your one option... of course, I may be wrong, as I pointed out before.
Instead of trying to force a "below zero" scenario, it would make a lot more sense to simply move the entire project forward a few measures, wouldn't it? If it were me, I'd move it all down the timeline by a good ten measures, just to be sure it was all sync'd up and I had breathing room, too.

Hi uptildwan dawm
Thanks for your quick attention. You maybe right. I will use your suggestion. I did notice in ProTools that there was a setting to change the MTC offset. Not sure what that does so ill research that.
If you or anyone has any insight about this I'm all ears!
Thanks again Dj

Goodness, there are so many threads...and you guessed it, I am new here. I have a VS1680 and tons of recorded tracks, most backed up to the Roland CD format. I have M- Powered 8 Pro Tools on Win7 machine. For those of you who have done any of the following successfully and relatively easily, I would happily be pointed to the right posts: 1-gotten good rips from Roland Data dumps (from the 1680 or other model) 2-midi synced VS machine with pro tools
I do not wish to abandon and re-do all the music from the VS, yet as with every other recorder I have owned, I have always "transferred music". It's just more complicated now. I'd be happy to be steered in the right direction. I need the easiest to follow. I am primarily a musician, even though I am a recording enthusiast, I'd prefer it be easy to record, not hard. Any and all help is welcome. By the way, I think this board is awesome and I did search the posts, but I was overwhelmed by the many suggestions and hoped someone could give me a sort of "best of" already tried thing.... THANK YOU all...

Hi. I made a Cd with my vs 1824cd. Thinking of going with protools.Would I be able to re mix and edit the Cd and "get it out of the 1824" and use protools instead?

What kind of CD?
Audio CD? - just use any program that can rip audio CDs into .wav files and then import into Protools
VS BACKUP CD? Use the VSWE program to convert the roland backup into .wav files and import into protools
See the sticky at top of the 1680 forum or the 2480 forum for info on VSWE

Try, also, connecting a SPDIF cable from the PT interface to the Roland, and setting the Roland clock to EXT. Once the clocks are locked, the Roland will almost instantly sync once MTC is received. AND, since the Roland is already locked to the PT clock, you can pipe audio back to PT digitally, without having to set the PT interface clock to EXT (the incoming stream is ALREADY locked!)

I can tell you one thing from experience with the VS and midi sync.... The VS likes to be master.
Not to say you won't get it to work the other way, but if it's a struggle, that may well be the reason.

well just to let you no a little thing about VS and midi sync.... The VS likes to be master. ? ( well here a wee tip for u and if you read the owners manual you find out that you can go into the systems setting and change the roland VS-1824 to be the Slave)

Certainly, as with any VS.... it still doesn't change the fact that the VS prefers to be master.... in my experience.

From page 197 of the 1824 user manual
"When using MTC, you can choose whether to have the MIDI sequencer be the master that controls the VS-1824, or to have the VS-1824 be the master that controls the MIDI sequencer. When you use MIDI Clock, you can synchronize a MIDI sequencer using the VS-1824 as the master, but it is not possible to synchronize the VS-1824 as a slave to MIDI Clock."
So just like the the 1680 and 1880 - if using MTC the VS can be either MASTER or SLAVE -- if using MIDICLOCK the VS HAS to be the master

Anyone tried this recently?
I'm transferring tracks from a VS-880 to ProTools 11 via spdif through my Mbox 3 on a PC running Windows 10.
I've been recording some sync notes onto a track on the VS, then copying that to every track on there at the same point.
It's been working fine, but I'd love to have the VS and ProTools in sync via MIDI so the 2-track stereo passes record into ProTools with no need to sync up again afterwards.
Possible to do? Anyone done the same?
I tried using the settings outlined above, but nada, both ways.
Any help much appreciated chaps!
