Rob, I don't like it. It's too good. Your making me look bad again.
Ok, here's my thoughts.

1. Your lead solo is great. Fast enough, but not long enough. (That's what my wife says about me)

2. I can't hear the bass guitar on my computer.

3. The song might be a little too long. (That's just an opinion from a guy that writes 3 min tunes).

4. The vocals could be louder and sound bigger. Maybe some comp?

Great Tune! Nice melody lines. Drums sound fantastic.

Take the above advice and you'll be a million-air superstar.

Hmmm. For the first time, I believe the vocals are loud enough (IMO). Love the harmony vocals! Adds a whole new dimension(sp?). Bass was a little muddy, you might have to work a little on the low end. Guitar work was great as usual, no issues. As for the length, I was interested and listened for the whole 20 minutes. ;\)

Lyrically, for the chorus, you might want to write another two lines rather than repeat the first two lines twice. Again, JMO.

Overall, it rocks and I look forward to hearing the final version!

hey ron!

thanks for checking it....

man, if you can't hear the bass, you've got a problem with your playback system, seriously!
LOL

this is the album version.
heheh
i'll do a 'radio version', that is only 2 minutes long.

the vox, were crushed going in, with outboard comp, i just wanted to try it.
i like it.
but, the attack wasn't quite right, let too much 'spit' on the front end of every line pop thru.....
live and learn.

bill-
appreciate the review....

the vox, yeah, they're loud.
haha
there's no effects on them at all, absolutely nothing, except the comp going in.
i tweaked the bass on the updated version (see below), plus i didn't master this one, just to see if THAT elements was making the bass too much, which means i've got to figure out how to dial in my mastering.

on the chorus lyric issue, i like repeating the lines, that's the hook!
i think i'm going to re-track the solo guitar this weekend, and try a couple of alternative mixes, and maybe try the 'chopped' version, just to see if it still floats....

Updated mix:

"Just Walk Away"
http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/29927-justwalkaway.mp3

i didn't master this one, except to apply a bit of master eq and 5db of limiting just to bring the level up a bit.
you can see from the screenshot, it's very conservative, level wise, with zero compression.
the soundcloud waveform is a bogus view of the actual waveform.

Lyric:

i stood right there at the edge and walked away
yeah, i stood there at the edge and just walked away
i've seen the dark deep hole, that drowns out the day
my spirit pulled me back againand just walked away

i was told a simple story when i was quite young
my dad, he had a brother, bad times had left him stung

the years follow, and it fades to black, all that 'missing time' is gone now
we all wished we could get it back - looking, but i never found the time i lost

i stood right at the edge and walked away
yeah, i stood there at the edge and just walked away

they say 'the time is now'....just the same as it's always been
'save a penny, save a dime', 'gonna make a new friend'

swiss time is running out, and it's the same just anywhere you go.
feeling older, hitting the wall, and now you know.

i stood right there at the edge and walked away
yeah, i stood there at the edge and just walked away

i've seen a new and sunny day, another path, that did not happen
and now i'm on my way to another day

take a turn, and walk away, take a turn and walk away,
take a shot, at what you want - whatcha say?

all my cares just float away at the end of a dream
lightly touching a starry sky, do you know, where i've been?

the journey's almost done and that's a fact
i couldn't help but hold out until the final act

if you see a light ahead, yeah, it is the tunnel
you can just head straight for it and start a new life

i stood right there at the edge and walked away
yeah, i stood there right at the edge and just walked away
i've seen the dark deep hole, that drowns out the day
my spirit pulled me back again, just walk away
i just walked away.

gonzo, I'm listening on my computer, but when I listen to label songs I hear thier bass fine. Fron your comment, I suppose you hear the bass ok. No matter, great song.

ron, check the new version.
many tweaks on the low end on the new version..

plus, no compression on the mastering, just a touch of limiting to bring the overall level up

maybe i mix the bass lighter to help it sit right on a cranked decent system.
in the cans, it sounds plenty loud enough to me.

This mix has MUCH more punch. Especially in the drums (kick, toms, snare). It is the equivalent of putting on glasses before and after watching a movie.

Here is a suggestion for the bridge, at 3:34 when the more quiet passage starts, cut the drums, and when the bridge is over and the "build" starts, push the faders up on the drums.

bill!!

LOL
that's what i've already done on that section....

tho, i guess i need to be a bit more aggressive with the fader movement.....
heheh

but you're right, that's what needs to happen.

i'm thinking of taking all the funky guitar parts, and panning them all right, and all the vox and backups, pan them left, as it is, i've tried to ride the fence by simply spreading them out...

but there's so much counterpoint to that section, no matter how i set the levels, it feels like the guitars are stepping on the vox.

more experiments to come.....

Hey Rob, checked out the new mix. Much better.

Ok, the part that Bill was talking about @ 3:34 or so.
My suggestion...Pull the lead guitar part out. Maybe just a 3 or 4 note slow melody line there. Then, as you get to the next solo part, right after that, cook it up man. Needs to match the speed and intensity of the 1st solo part. IMO you're going too slow at that point.
After hearing the first part of the solo, it's a bit of a letdown when I hear the second solo part.
What do you think?

ron-
ok, i gotcha.
that part, that starts at 3:34, isn't a lead. that's the 2nd bridge, with a guitar rhythm behind it....

it's a 4 part harmony, with 4 guitars playing single lines, it's supposed to be sort of like a keyboard counterpart.....
it does sound busy tho...
i really like those parts.
but i may have to lose them, just because they dont back the vocal part correctly, or at least, as a standard expected backing track would.

maybe, an acoustic guitar, strumming gently, with only the vox left....
there's plenty going on there harmonically to pull it off, i've got the lead vox and 3 part harmony, plus the bass line is walking....?

Yea, if you use the strumming guitar, you might be able to bring the walking bass up so that it dominates.

As far as the bass guitar volume through the whole song, that's been a pain for me. My experience has been that the bass guit kills the kick or the kick kills the bass guit no matter how I eq.
What seems to work the best for me is to cut some kick hits out and the bass seems to magically be more pronounced.
You probably know more than me about this.

With my mixes, label stuff seems to get the Bass guit/kick better than I can get it. (maybe because of their supperior gear?)

Can't wait to hear the next mix.

almost done with the new mix.

not sure i'll post it tho.

i'm trying to dial in the songs that will become my next 'album' release, so as i get to final mixes, i tend to pull back from posting them.

i have a pair of higher-end sony ear buds, that have extended bass response, and i've done a lot of listening to pro releases, then a/b'ing them against my mixes.

that said, i know that this particular mix, is WAY TOO HEAVY on the bass guitar level.

or at least, too much low end in the bass track.

i've really been tweaking a lot, and i think i'm onto what works for cleaning up my low end now...

involves a great deal of upper low end roll off.....
and it still sounds deep!
