If my VS-plug-in keyed VS8F-3 card (slot A) were to die, would I have any repair or replacement options? Would I be able to have my software keys transferred to one of my other cards or would my software plug-ins become permanently inoperable?

Does Roland still offer any support and service these cards and the keyed software?

Thanks for your help.

Bob

Roland's support number in Los Angeles, Ca. USA is 1-323-890-3700. I think they are there Monday, Wednesday & Fridays during biz hours, closed for lunch last time I called.

I have heard here that they no9 longer support the VS2480s so I imagine that includes the VS8F-2 & 3 cards as well.

As for VS8F-3 cards going bad, I have not heard of it happening but I have heard that the install disc for the 3cards and their third party plug-ins can quick working after a few installs so it's very important to make backups of the cards and plug-ins off the CD-R Mastering menu and use those for re-installs.
If the 3card goes bad, then the plug-ins go with them.
Use to folks could get additional install disc when the disc went bad but that's been a while back as well.

It's worth it just to have a 3card for the mastering tool kits on them that process at 56bits as well as the other free plug-ins. You don't HAVE to buy third party plug-ins plus, they are getting harder to find these days.
Hope this helps
Frank.

Hi Frank

Good to see you are still help manning the VS Planet. I post little but visit often and have appreciated your contributions over the years. OT on this, but hope you can help a newbie.. I want to start extracting my VS files. I bought an r-BUS card years ago that Ive never used, but it seems that VrDIS is a more efficient solution. Does Vrdis only run on Windows? I have an old dell laptop with Win 7 and wondering if I can use that to start?

thanks again
Mike

Nor sure about Win7 with VirDis, maybe run a post in the 2480 forum. You can't use VirDis with a laptop till they come out with their stand alone version in the future. Laptops can't handle PCI and PCIe cards. Just get a used XP Pro PC desktop that has PCI slots and install VirDis in it. You need a desktop to run with the R-Bus card too.
Hope this helps
Frank

I called Roland support line today as Frank suggested. They confirmed that they no longer provide operational or software support for the VS-2480,
but referred me to the service department to check on availability of repair service. The service department's direct dial number (323)890-7710.

The girl in the service department said that the VS-2480 was NOT on her "Do Not Service List", so she concluded that service is still available,
currently at the rate of $80/hour. She also stated that she had parts available. (probably not all parts, but some)

They do not have VS8F-3's available as replacement parts, but they would service them. So it would seem that if your plug-in keyed VS8f-3 card (Slot A) malfunctioned,
it could be repaired. She also stated that they still offer disk recovery services for VS-2480's. On the question of re-keying plug-in software to a different VS8F-3 card,
in the event that the plug-in keyed card (Slot A) is damaged beyond repair, she referred me back to the Support department.

Roland Support said they simply do not support the VS-2480 any longer, so if the card was not repairable the plug-ins would be lost.

I hope that answers any questions.
Thanks to all for your replies.

$80 per hour is not worth it, especially when you include minimum $100 for round shipping. Better to put your money towards another used $500 unit completely imo.

As far as the fx cards go, I've never ever heard of one going bad, either type, the VS8F-2 or 3, and I've been using the VS series since the 1680 came out 16 years ago (or so).
