The QPS SCSI CD-RW II endorsed by Roland for use with the 880 and the 1680 does not come with update disks for the 890. Because the 890 is supposed to be CD ready right out of the box, I think I might need a system rebuild, to remove a corrupt update or something. Is there a system rebuild set available from the roland dealers/repair shop? I would like the system put back to just like it was when it shipped. I see online that there is no rom reset. I would hate to mess up such a nice studio....trying to reset the os roms...

On power up, the VS-890 (as well as the VS-880, and VS-880EX) scans the external scsi bus, looking for a hard disk, or any scsi-1 or scsi-2 removable disk device (iomega zip, iomega jaz, syquest ez-drive, syquest syjet, syquest ez-flyer, scsi-CF, fujitsu mo, fujitsu dynamo, olympus sys ) and looks for a file called Vs890.prg in the first partition (max size 1 GB).
If the VS finds the file, it proceeds to load it and write it to it's flash memory.
Provided you extract the .prg file from the zip compressed archive file found on the RolandUS.com website, copy the .prg on the hard disk, and proceed like a ZIP drive, that's as close as a reset of the flash rom you can achieve.

Why not start by downloading the most current OS version available at rolandus.com http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=483&tab=downloads&skip=true
Choose the appropriate mac, pc, or zip disk version.... whatever is easiest for you to install to your 890.
Even if you already have the latest os installed, this (or any) os can be installed over it.
I really doubt that you want the original state the 890 shipped in, since it will no doubt require this os update before it will work as it was intended when they stopped producing it.
To my knowledge, there is no update file for the burner itself, nor do I recall having ever seen one ship with either of the Roland-branded burners I bought in years past.
Worse come to worse, give Roland tech help a call and maybe, given detailed enough information from you, they will have an easy solution to whatever problem it is that you have with this 890, or the burner.

Wow! That's really helpful. Don't know why I didn't consider going to look for firmware updates for these machines through the "normal" means I would for my PC stuff.... weird that I somehow forget that these Roland-branded devices are simply adapted to work WITH the VS and not proprietary, so much.
Have you actually done the firmware updates to any VS burners before... and has it resulted in any performance improvements that you can see?
I've always wished the CD Rack I own worked a little more consistently and that the 1680 wouldn't reject so many of the very backup discs it created in the first place. But I'm also reluctant to install firmware in a unit if the result could actually do more harm than good to an otherwise okay-working machine.

I did in it's time on the VS-CDR I, that's the JVC. Had issues with rewriteable media that were solved with the firmware updates. I never had a VS-CDR II but I did have and updated a bunch of other compatible SCSI CD-RWs.
But I'm also reluctant to install firmware in a unit if the result could actually do more harm than good to an otherwise okay-working machine.
You know what they say: Your mileage may vary.

I think the CD-Rack has the Plextor in it... I'll have to take it apart again to find out. If not that model, at least a similar one... Anyway, thanks for the reminder.

Nice to see you back here, Gnatz.... Have you tried loading the most recent 890 OS yet? I'm just re-copying my earlier post so you don't have to scroll back: Why not start by downloading the most current OS version available at rolandus.com http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=483&tab=downloads&skip=true

The update does not need SCSI to upload. It can be loaded from any PC, using Roland's SMF tool to load the update midi files, which are then transmitted to the 890 by way of a single midi cable.... out from the PC to in on the 890. You'll need a midi connector on the PC... some usb-to-midi adapters work if you don't have midi built in, or on a soundcard.
Regardless of whatever else you may think you need to "fix", you'll eventually need to last OS Roland issued... or at least the 2nd-to-last, which I don't think is available from their support pages anymore.
