Take this brief trip with me--I promise you will discover something interesting.
The song is Cole Porter's What Is This Thing Called Love?
First, just to absorb the melody, listen to a soulful, slow rendition by Billie Holiday. Maybe not the whole song, but at least once through the melody, ok?
And then...listen to Bill Evans in 1959 like you have probably never heard him play the piano, Scott Lafaro on bass and paul Motian on drums. All gone now. All on fire for this session.
Listen especially to the way Evans plays the melody, abbreviating it here, extending it there. Then his solo--when the drums drop out and it's just him and the bassist, that's telepathy. And the entire time, he's inventing lines that flow effortlessly, and spontaneous stabs that keep goosing the energy higher and higher.
