This is getting to be a huge hassle for me. I'm looking to update the os on a vmc7100 console and processor. I have to do it via midi, because all the smart media to usb converters I have tried don't seem to work with newer computers.
So I downloaded the midi update files from roland directly, and it seems the processor files are in a normal (albeit hexadecimal) order of 01-0f in two separate folders, disk 1 and disk 2.
The console files, however, start with 0a, skip directly to 02-09 (folder 1), go to 0b-0f, skip to 10-13 (folder 2), go to 1a-1c, skip directly to 14-17 (folder 3), and the last volume is 1d-1f.
This makes no sense to me whatsoever. Despite reassurance from Roland tech support that this is in fact the correct order, I'm suspicious (he sounded like he was guessing, admitted no knowledge of the product, and i'm loathe to foot the bill to send it back for a factory reset should something go wrong).
Is the playback order vital for midi sysex messages when updating software?
or maybe if anyone has a spare smart media card and a useable usb converter, would they be interested in mailing me a card with the smart media update files on them in exchange for a little bit of cash?
Have you just simply tried hooking up the midi and running the files with the SMF utility? It will load the files automatically, without any need for you to dictate the order.
