Well, I suppose if I wanted to bypass the analog inputs on the VS and no one was making new preamps with digital outs, then I'd look for used ones, since there used to be an assortment of digital output preamps on the market. Looking at used units on the bay brought me this tonight: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&...at=119018&rt=nc Maybe that would be a start?
Definitely have been looking there. Just wondered if someone might already have this setup nailed. There are some new ones with AES/EAU or ADAM lightpipe outputs, but I don't know if that's compatible with any of the 2480 ports...
Why don't you pick a good tube pre with analog outs and then run it into something like an old Apogee Rosetta that you can pick up for reasonable money (like $300) - that will get you around the 2480s pres and give you a really nice sound.

I agree.
I've been thinking about the front end a lot lately and trying to figure out what I need. A tube preamp and a compressor seems to be all the hardware necessary-the rest I can do in the box. But the VS units sound a lot better with a tube preamp and compressor in front.
I've been thinking about getting the ART Digital MPA-II 2-Ch Mic Tube Pre Amp. It looks ideal and has digital i/o. But I don't know if I trust ART enough to give them 400 bucks.
