What are you using to "render" the song?... reaper?
Are you setting it to render stems?

Are you rendering inside of reaper?

You are probably rendering the master mix - you need to unclick that and click "RENDER STEMS" in the render dialog.

Also the tracks you want to render must be SELECTED (click on the track number on the left hand side - ctrl click for multiple tracks)

Here's a link to the VSwaveExport, CD Ripper and Reaper...
http://www.ps139.com/vs880ex/util/
Reaper's site...
http://www.cockos.com/reaper/
Here's 2 more threads on the subject...
http://www.vsplanet.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=13241#Post13241
AND
http://www.vsplanet.com/ubbthreads/ubbth...true#Post439561

The VSWaveExport and Ripper are free and reaper is free for 30 days and then ask for a $40 donantion or something.
Anyway, VSWaveExport and Ripper are fast ways to get to .wav. Beats exporting out of the VS to CD-R many times over.
Later, Frank.

Have you tried using the ripper through VSWaveExport instead of standalone with the command line? I found it to be much easier to use this way.

OK, I'm way late to the game and this is a sort of specialized request, but here goes:

A friend of mine is in a quartet. One of the members of the Quartet purchased a VS-890. I used the VS-890 a few days ago to record the quartet and their iPod/keyboard onto six tracks. I want to pull the audio off the VS-890 and edit and master it on my computer (may not be relevant, but it's a Macbook running Windows and OSX, so I have a choice). I do NOT have an external CD recorder or ZIP drive, I can't seem to find one here in NW Montana.

I was able to pull the hard drive and put it in an enclosure where I can see that there is data on the drive, but I can't open it with Reaper. Reaper looks for VR7 files, but this drive has a bunch of folders with songxxxx.vr7 titles and some sort of file inside, but Reaper doesn't see them.

What can I do to get the audio into the computer with the tools I have?

I have:

VS-890
Macbook with Windows or OSX
External Firewire hard drive enclosure (can use USB with power supply)

Thank you so much

Jeremy J

I do not have experiance with the 890.

I do know the 1680 internal harddrive does NOT store data in such a way as to present a roland file system on a PC so reaper can see it. Danielo was looking at this awhile back and found some non-standard things in the FAT16 allocaton table if I remember correctly.

Other VS users have reported that their models DO store data on the internal drive such that you can pull it out and read it.

On the 1680 EXTERNAL drives (on the SCSI port) DO store things such that they can be read correctly on the PC.... this includes harddrives, CF cards, zip drives etc.

I am afraid you are going to have to find a CD burner or a SCSI solution.

Can you post a directory list of what you do see when you hook the drive up to the PC through the USB adapter? I can at least then see if it looks the same as a 1680 internal.

Hi Bear,

The drive is back in the VS-890 right now, but my recollection of the file structure for the drive was as follows:

Folders -

SONG0000.VR7
SONG0001.VR7
SONG0002.VR7
...
SONG0019.VR7

(I can't recall how many songs I have on there)

Inside each SONGxxxx.VR7 folder werea few files with strange character followed by an ellipsis - that tells me Win XP couldn't read the file and didn't know what to do with it.

THere were two other files on the root directory SONGLIST.VR7 and another I can't recall the name of, but with extension .VR7.

It all looked good, like Reaper ought to be able to read something, but it couldn't.

Now, when I put the drive back in the VS-890, My songs don't show up. So I'm up a creek this moment \:\(

Thanks for any help.

Hmmm Yes this sounds exactly like what I see on a 1680 internal drive.

Pulling mine out, trying it in the PC and putting it back into the 1680 did not lose any songs however.

You did not try to WRITE anything or re-arrange any directories or anything like that while you had it out? This could screw up the FAT I think.

I did not write anything to the drive intentionally, but I have understood that XP will write a small amount of information to a drive when it's connected - this was used in a firewire external drive case. Perhaps that's what happened? I also think the VS-890 can't see IDE partion 0 right now and I think that's where my songs are. It seems Partitions 1 through 5 which makes some sense if they are all 1G partitions (I believe 1G is a default partition size for the VS-890). So I am relatively sure my songs are still on the drive, but the VS-890 can't see them, so now I need to figure out how to get them off the drive another way.

Thanks again for your input.

JJ

OK, NEWS FLASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took the hard drive from the VS-890 and installed it into an external firewire drive caddy. Then I used a utility called VSWE1.24a to extract all the songs I could find to .wav files. I think I got everything.

I was pretty nervous about messing with it this way, but I figured it was worth a shot and it worked. The VSWE1.24a utility seems to freeze up when I try to click on Partition6 of my VS hard drive, but I think I got all the songs and nothing was actually in partition6.

Anyway, on to some editing and musing over a way to not do that again \:\)

You know, I was going to say right from the start that you should be looking at VSWaveExport instead of trying to go straight into Reaper from the hard drive, but then I figured....... Hey!..... Somebody here will know more about this than me.... and besides, this guy must have already read about it if he's on THIS thread....right?....

Sorry not to have mentioned it until now... but then, I don't have the 890, so I'm not certain what you were doing wasn't at all possible.

oops.

Hmm I guess Danielo put the FAT unscrambler into his program. I know he was talking about it but I did not know he had actully done it.

I will have to try it with the 1680 harddrive.

Glad you got what you needed.

HELP

Don't know the last time I checked out the Planet until yesterday someone contacted me and needed wav files from an old vs session. I still use my 1880 as my input mixer but hadn't recorded with it in about 3 years. So I figured I'd look and see if there was finally a way to pull the files from the backups. Of course I saw the thread and said "!@#$ yeah"

OK, here's the problem. I run the cd2roland and it gets to the next to last sector and freezes. it says 100% but it never says complete or anything. Plus it seems to lock the pc up.

What am I doing or should be doin?

Are you running it through VSWaveExport, or by itself using the command line?
Is it the most current version of cd2Roland?
Is the disc a cd-r or a cd-rw?

Just throwing some troublshooting ideas at 'cha while you wait for a reply from the guys that built the things.

version 1,24a (or is it up to c?) of VSWaveExport is working quite consistently for me.

never used the command line with export at all, so I don't have a clue there... but I stopped using the command line with cd2roland when export began including it in the "Extras" menu (rip from cd-r).

Hope you get it worked out. Have you tried with more than one backup cd?..... or tried burning another copy of the one session?

This is what I used...

http://support.alcohol-soft.com/en/knowledgebase.php#general

Method for removing Alcohol 120% manually
To manually remove Alcohol, please adopt following steps:

1.run "regedit"

2.Find & delete this key
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{E9F81423-211E-46B6-9AE0-38568BC5CF6F}"

3. Find & delete this key
"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\32418F9EE1126B64A90E8365B85CFCF6"
To remove the Alcohol driver go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services

The Alcohol Driver Keys for vers 1.9.2.1705, 1.9.5.2722 or 1.9.5.2802 = a347scsi & a347bus,

a347scsi.sys 5.12 KB (5,248 bytes)
a347bus.sys 156 KB (160,640 bytes)

vers 1.9.5.3105 = vax347s * vax347b

Delete these Keys and the corresponding files from System32\Drivers folder.

Re boot your PC.

Hello, I was very happy to find this Forum and tried to import the tracks from a backup-CD made by the original SCSI-burner.
Unfortunately the answer is always the following:

------------------------------------------
Drive type is recognized as CDROM/DVD

Could not create handle for CD/DVD device

Input .iso or .hex File Not Found
------------------------------------------

When I try to watch the content of the backup CD with explorer it shows no file.

I've tried to create an ISO-file with UltraISO but it says "Unknown file format".

Can sombody help me? Thanks a lot!

What version of windows are you running Nikolo? When I look at the code the error message "Could not create handle for CD/DVD device" seems to imply a routine meant to try to maintain compatibility for NT is running....

I would suggest you try it on another machine, a friends or something.

Hi Bear - you got me!

I've tried on my two machines - both old Windows versions, because my other software still runs pretty good on it: Win 98 and Win Me.

I'll take your advice and try on some friend's machines - then I'll give a report.

Thanks for your hint!

Hey Nikolo - 1999 called - it wants it's OS back... LOL

The ripper will certainly NOT run the low level sector access portion of the program on 98 or ME.

The roland file system creation portion of the program SHOULD (untested) work if you can create an .iso and use it though. I have seen a couple of post that they got this going under 98.

Just invoke the ripper with the filename of the .iso (with full path if not in the same subdirectory) instead of a drive letter.

I have a quick question, preceded by a quick shout-out to Bear and all others involved in the VSWaveExport and CD-R ripper utility: THEY RULE! \:\)

OK, now here's the question. I used these tools for the first time a couple of days ago to convert a Roland backup CD-R (containing a single song) to WAV files. It worked like a charm. Today, I tried to do the same thing when a backup CD-R containing two songs, and ran into problems.

The CD-R conversion part seemed to work fine, and the result was my two songs listed in the "Roland drives and files:" window. However, when I clicked on one of them, I got a little Output pop-up dialog window with this message:

Overlapping Events at T1-5 00:00:-1 [@3084] detected!

When I selected one of the songs and clicked the Export button, I got another little pop-up dialog window that simply said Unknown Format.

I thought the problem might be caused by the fact that there were two songs on the backup CD-R, so I tried repeating the process with another backup CD-R that just had one song on it, but the results were the same.

This is perplexing, given that it just worked two days ago. Any hints or ideas? Thanks!

Ugh...the problem just got a little worse. I tried following the instructions to convert my Roland songs to WAV using Reaper, but when I try to open my Roland SONG files, I get an error pop-up that says "UKN encodings are currently not supported". As a test, I tried doing this with the SONG file for the backup that I was able to successfully convert using VSWaveExport, and as I would have expected, Reaper was able to handle it correctly. Any ideas as to why these new backups are suddenly not kosher with VSWaveExport and Reaper?

OK, another update: I was just able to successfully convert 3 backed up songs that I burned at the same time as the other ones that I couldn't convert. So, this is clearly an intermittent problem. Maybe the Roland is just occasionally producing funky backup disks?

OK, this just keeps getting weirder. After discovering that I could successfully convert some of the songs, I went back and re-tried converting the ones that failed before...and now they work! Kooky. Anyway, I'm just posting all these results in case they are of use/interest to anyone else encountering similar problems. Upward and onward! \:\)
