Hi dabeatman,
my manual says itīs possible to use a zip-drive for backup.
First you have to formating the zip-disk with the VS 1680, then you can copy playable and archives songs.

The zip drive must be scsi to use with the VS..... that's the number one issue.
Unless there's some kind of converter out there that let's you use a non-scsi zip drive on a scsi connection..... like with ide hard drives and scsi cases... I don't know of one, but I'm not a techie either.

The copy playable method is one of the main ways to convert to wav.

The VirDis virtual hard drive makes it easy to create data backups directly to the computer, which can then be easily converted to wav files.
I've been using VirDis for a while now and although I haven't been in touch with Bill Casey in a while, spent some time helping him get VirDis working nice with the 1680 and 880 last summer by testing his changes on my machines.

The main thing you'll spend cash for is the special scsi pci card that's required for your pc.... Are you using a pc, or a mac with your protools?

VirDis is really great and holds promise for some advanced features Bill is working on still.
The only limitation (for me) is the need for special hardware. Once installed, it's easy to create "backup" images, or song copy playable images on the computer. The song copy images can easily be edited, recorded to, or pretty much anything you would do with them on the VS..... like using an external scsi drive. Either format can be backed up to dvd/cdr using your computer's burning software and drives.

Hi everybody,
when I connect my VS1680 Harddisk via an USB connector to my PC and then start VS Wave Export, the program shows:
PHYSICALDRIVE1 and Partition0-4 (itīs a 10GB HD). But if I try to open one of these partitions (clicking on the +) then I get this error message: Run-time error '9': Subscript out of range.
Any idea??

scarlet,

I sent you a PM.

There is a problem with swapped bytes on the 1680 IDE drive, i'll try to adjust VSWaveExport to address this issue.

cheers

I haven't played around with Reaper enough yet, but the program only builds the raw tracks into the session, correct? No automation, EQ, pan or FX settings.... right?

If this is the case, just build your output tracks from Reaper into wav files when you're finished editing them. Or if you're just trying to get your VS tracks to a useable form, you could convert them to wav with VS Wave Export and skip Reaper.

" I put a backup cd in my pc and double clicked on the desktop shortcut and to my amazement... IT STARTED EXTRACTING FILES ALL BY ITSELF!!!"

Funky,

i made a rip.bat file and placed it in the same folder as the Cd2Roland.exe file...i then made a shortcut to my desktop of the bat file. When i click on the shortcut i get a windows error popup that says

C:\test\rip.bat is not a valid windows operation

Can you give me a stsep by step on how to do this?..i am missing something somwhere.

also i guess in reaper there is a way to render the VS song into every trax/has its own wav to import into pro-tools? correct?

Thanks again to all you guys for figuring this amazing process out

Can you give me a stsep by step on how to do this?..i am missing something somwhere.
1. Open Windows Notepad.

2. Type Cd2Roland followed by your pc's cd drive letter: For example, if the drive letter is E, type:

Cd2Roland e

3. Click File > Save As... then type rip.bat and press ENTER. (You just created a .bat file. Now the following is what to do with it.)

4. Copy the Cd2Roland file into the "test" folder you made earlier.

5. Place your newly created .bat file in the same "test" folder with the Cd2Roland file. Close the folder.

6. Right click on your desktop and select New > Shortcut. Click "Browse" and navigate your way to the "test" folder and select the "rip.bat" file and press ENTER. Rename the desktop shortcut whatever you like such as, "VS Tracks Ripper."

You're done! You have now created a .bat file and a shortcut to it on your desktop. Put a Roland backup cd in your cd drive and double click on the "VS Tracks Ripper" icon on your desktop and watch the magic begin.
_________________________________________________

It had been awhile since I did this and I just recently purchased a new studio pc, so I had to follow my own directions tonight to create a new .bat file. Anyway, I just did it and it worked again.

I really don't have any idea why it didn't work for you. What Windows os are you using? I am using XP. The only thing I would recommend is to slowly re-check all your steps again. You followed my directions to the letter?

Good luck and let me know how it goes.

No its me Funky ;\)

What i want to do is after a VS song has been converted to open in Reaper I want to then be able to load it into Pro Tools.

If a song has 16 traxs i am trying to figure out how to reneder it in reaper so each trax is still on its own when loaded up into PT...not a stereo 2 trax .wav....this make any sense?

Thanks again for all your help

PS the ,bat file step by step did the trick..i was missing the drive letter in the file :thumb:

Yes sir. Makes perfect sense now and this is very easy to do in reaper. It's actually in my directions. Go re-read item number 9 in my directions on the first page and pay specific attention to "Render Stems."

Also, make sure you don't have "Render Master Mix" enabled when you render your wavs or you will have both, stems and a 2 track master.

Good luck! \:\)

Oh yeah, one more bit of important information. You also have to manually select all the tracks in reaper to render as wavs. So you would do the old windows hold down CNTRL or SHIFT (can't remember which is it right now) and then select all the tracks you want to render with your mouse.

Once all the desired tracks are selected, you can then render all the stems as wavs in one fell swoop. ;\)

Got it

Render stems: This is for rendering individual tracks separately.

Add items to new tracks in project when finished: This will take your newly rendered tracks and insert them into your existing project for further editing if you want.

Excellent! One more quick point. Make sure you select Mono instead of Stereo as well or it will render 16 stereo tracks. You don't want that. \:\)

Hey, Bleed,
I'm slightly hijacking this (sorry, guys), but I see you're a PT user.

I'm about to have my 1Ghz iBook RAMmed up to 1.25gb, in order to use it as a DAW with PTLE and the Mbox 2 Factory bundle.

Any views?

@Bleedstreet - Glad to hear it works for you.

Just wanted to make sure you are aware that if your desired end result is .wav files in PT, then Danielos program will do the conversion for you directly without messing with reaper....

Or whatever, doing it in reaper is not that difficult....

Delso,

Best place to check to check out PT/PC setups is

http://duc.digidesign.com/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=UBB32

there is a thread there called

BEST LAPTOPS FOR PTLE on the main page.

I think 1.25gb should work but they know for sure.

will this program open up a VS data disc or do you need to have the VS itself hooked up to the pc?

Data disc is the ticket for the simplest conversion, assuming you own a burner to make data backups.

External hard drive is a great alternative if you have the right type of setup for both the VS and pc.

VirDis is a very intelligent solution for creating virtual hard drives on your pc to write directly from the VS to the computer, but includes the cost of a special pci scsi card for the computer... not just any scsi card will work for VirDis to do its slickness.

@BleedStreet - you can either use the files ripped from a CD with my ripper program, or direct from a SCSI harddrive if your PC can see it (i.e. has a SCSI card)

With Danielo's program just drag and drop the SONG.VRx that you get from the ripper.

"you can either use the files ripped from a CD"

but not a VS backup data cd correct?

When i use the wav extract tool it says "No Roland device found"

SCSI is not a option for me so i have 1 option.

The cd2roland/reaper conversion then import the .wavs to PTLE

There is no option of putting a VS data disc into my pc drive and have a tool extract the seperate traxs as wavs.

Thats cool...dont mind running thru the reaper conversion...ez nuff'

thanks bear

Yes, use the data cd-r. That's what bear is talking about.

Use the CD2Roland bit to make the folder with the song file and the track files just like you would before opening the song file in Reaper.
Then, use VS Wave Export by dragging the SONG file into the window (or whatever you call it). VS Wave Export will show you all the tracks as they are in the VS virtual track display.

When you first double-click VS Wave Export, it will always say "No Roland Device Found"... Click OK and then the program window will open up... Then you drag the SONG file into it.... Also..... READ the instructions... that will help. \:\) \:\)

To all the people who worked on this a big thank you. It has saved me alot of time.

Of course the "but" has to come next. Several fo the data cds I tried ripping (all made on VS-1680) did not seem to finish the ripping process. A large hex file was created, but towards the end of the ripping process the screen said it could not find the envent list and it shut down leaving just the large hex file.

Does this mean the backups are bad? Is there something I can do. Out of around 200-300 backup cds i had this problem with 75ish.

I should note that I am not super computer savy when it comes to this sort of thing, but I am a fairly quick study. If people could keep that in mind when replying to this it would make me happy.

The best I can offer at the moment is to suggest that you try the failed cd-rs more than once... clearing out and deleting anything the ripper left behind in a previous attempt (the hex file).

If you have more than one cd/dvd drive, try the ripper with the cd-r in another drive.

I have used both of these suggestions with success when it appeared that I had a bad disc.

Also, try re-loading the failed disc back in the VS to make sure the Roland can read it... although that's not a guarantee that the pc will work with it.

One final thought would be to check on the cd drive manufacturer's website to see if there have been any firmware updates issued for your pc's cd drive. You can generally find the make and model info by in Device Manager (Right-click My Computer and go to Properties, click on the hardware tab/ device manager/ then you'll find the cd/dvd drives in the list.

wkolar - I have two problems with what you wrote.

1. Nowhere in the stripper is there a message saying "could not find event list"

2. The .hex file created by the stripper is supposed to be deleted at the end of the process. if it is still there when a strip completes something is real wrong, an exit from the program was abnormal.

Are you running ver 013?

Can you give more information on exactly what messages you are getting?

The only way I can fix this is by looking at the discs myself. Is there anyway you can send me a copy of a backup that does not work. This would be a great good for the VS family.....

Ver 014 of cd ripper now available

Stupid bug - if song filename contains characters '/' or '\' or '*' confuses windows...

now ripper will replace these characters with '_'

Danielo please update your website....

(Get 015 below instead)

Thanks to wkoler for providing me with discs to catch the problem

I'm not sure I'll ever get advanced enough to use it, but I downloaded it to save just in case. I've been lurking around VS Planet again lately after getting back into my 1880 via FunkyBeat's VS Pro website.
I certainly am appreciative and in awe of the work you guys have been doing with and for the VS's. :thumb:
