I've used both the 1176LN and LA2A, but can't seem to stop occasional peaks. Likewise, I cannot seem to keep the source material at a constant level. What settings do you use on vocals and synths?

One strategy commonly used with comps you might try...
Use one comp as a brickwall, only concentrating your efforts at containing the highest peaks, then apply a second comp after it that focuses on containing a more constant level.

Vocals can often respond nicely with very fast attacks and longer release settings.... as close to zero, or no attack slack as your comp will let you set it, then backing it off a tad based on the affect it has on the vocal as a whole (like if you get clicks, or distortion that you don't like).

Synths are totally content dependent. Sharp transients require fast attacks to contain the peaks. Smooth synth sounds and bass sounds require slower attacks to keep out clicks/pops, but can benefit from long release times...

Thresholds are totally content dependent and based on the resulting sound you want. Sometimes squashed is good, sometimes not so much...

You want to be careful using two rounds of compression; you'll raise any noise floor through the roof.

Why do you want to keep vox at a constant level, at least to look at on a meter? It's what reaches your ears that's important, not what it looks like on a graph or meter. A compressor, or limiter for that matter, is to stop peaks that are distorting noticeably, not so a graph looks 'pretty'.

cheers, Graeme

I've tried messing with the 1176LN plugin, but my concern is odd or occasional peaks at input, and I don't want to boost distortion or artefacts. I'll be buying an Empirical Labs Distressor (bloody expensive!) for vocal tracking.
