Hi guys: Yes it's been a while and I can't for the life of me remember how to get my Mac using Digital Performer to sync with the 2480. I used to do it and now it seems that all the settings that I thought I used before are not working. It appears that everything in the DP as far as transmit and receive midi is setup correct and on the VS I have tried both ways setting it up as the slave and as the master and still either way I can't get them to sync like I used to. I am also using a micro lit interface between the two machines. Midi cables are set up correct as far as the in's and outs. Any help in basic step by step detail would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys you've always come through in the past for me. Frank you still kicking on this site? Franks the man for sure!

Is this DP9? I got mine to sync with help from MOTU, but I've lost the info MOTU sent me. My trial of DP9 has also expired. I just tried it with AudioDesk 4.0 and it worked. I don't know if this matters, but I set both my VS recorder's MIDI OUT to THRU.
Presumably, you've clicked the clock (sync) button at the top of the DP9 window? Also check the "receive sync" in the setup tab is set to MTC. You click play on DP9, and it should blink continuously. Then hit play on the VS, and DP9's numeric display should start moving.
You may also want to check your MIDI/USB cable is working.

Hey, thanks so much for the reply unlucky, I really do appreciate you taking the time to help me out.
First off: My Keyboard ( Yamaha Motif) is working properly with DP and the sequence is playing, so I know the interface (Micro Lite) is working properly and that at least the cables to and from the keyboard and the interface with the computer and USB cable is working properly. I do have some drop out of notes which I don't understand because the sequence is at this point very minimal with only a keyboard sound, drums and bass, so if you might know something about that as well. I am using an old Macbook which was pretty full on memory until I deleted a bunch of files, however I still have the problem with notes dropping out. It worked fine the lat time I used it several months ago though.
I'm using DP 7. I checked to see about the "receive sync" and it is set to MTC. Question for ya. Are you referring to clicking the clock (sync) button in DP to set up the Roland as a Master or a Slave? I was hoping to set the DP up as the Master, but to answer your question, I've tried it both ways. When you describe this button as "blinking continuously", mine on DP just stays solid blue. The EXT SYNC on the Roland will blink continuously when I try to Slave it to DP by pressing that. Here is a break down of what I have at the present as far as settings, but I have tried all different options.
Settings on the Roland for Slaving to DP:
Utility Midi Parameter ----- Midi Out/Thru Device ID 17 SysEx. Rx Sw ON Mixer control type Off Effect P.C. Rx Sw Off MMC MODE SLAVE Control Local Sw ON SysEx. Tx Sw Off Scene P.C. Rx Sw Off Effect C. C. Rx Sw Off MMC Source Midi
Utility Sync Parameter ----- Sync Mode Ext Ext Sync Source Midi In Sync Offset Time All Zero's Error Level 5 Midi Out Sync Gen. Off R-Bus2 Sync Gen. Off Sync with Gap Off Frame Rate 30 R- Bus1 Sync Gen. Off
Tempo Maps for both Roland and DP are set to the same 140
Settings for the DP on MacBook
Setup --------------------------- Receive Sync SMPTE Frame Format 30 fps Type of sync: MIdi Time Code (MTC) Sync to port 2480 (4) This is because I have the midi cable coming out of the micro lit on port 4 and going to the Roland 2480's in and out. Both cables have been checked to make sure they are connected correctly.
Record while still-framed is NOT checked
Transmit Sync Transmit MTC to 2480 (4) Transmit Beat Clocks via ports: Micro Lite Port 4 Generated Midi Beat Clocks is enabled 24 clocks per quarter note is enabled First Clock is time 1 (not time 0) is enabled
The only thing I have yet to test is the midi cables going to the Roland, but haven't done that because I have never had any issues with them before. I will be checking those momentarily though.
I hope I didn't give you too much information to digest, but I feel that it's better for anyone to know more than less when trying to diagnose a problem. I sure do appreciate your giving me your time and attention and would hope down the road that I might be able to help you in some way as well. Same goes for anyone that can help me with this problem.
Thanks so much
Dan

Just changed my midi cables to the Roland and NO CHANGE! It's not the cables.

Update: I know now that the 2480 is getting information via the midi cables because I was able to record a sync track to it. As it was doing it, I was able to notice that the exact measure numbers were the same on DP as on the 2480. After that was done and I hit the space bar on the computer to stop it. the 2480 said done! However, I can't see where that got me anywhere because the two machines still don't seem to be working together. I put the 2480 into EXT SYNC mode and press play and then hit the space bar in DP and the sequence plays, but the transport on the 2480 still doesn't move. I even was able to go in and convert it to a tempo Map, (Not sure I needed to do that) but that didn't help either. I do notice that the little Midi/Disk light is receiving something, but as I say, the transport doesn't move on the 2480 at all. Still stuck and feeling very frustrated at this point. It really puts a hurting on my creativeness as a composer when I have these types of mechanical problems. Please! Can anyone help me out here? I have called Roland and they won't help because of the system not being sold anymore. Gee thanks for the support Roland! I have also called MOTU and they say that the DP is set up correct and that it must be something on the Roland side. I'm not totally convinced that the guy I was talking to really new his stuff, but that's another issue.

So the Yamaha is the MASTER device, DP7 is a slave, and so is the 2480? So DP7 and the 2480 must be set to slave, and their MIDI OUT's set to THRU. Likewise, the device in the middle of that MIDI chain must also transmit MMC/MTC.
BTW, if there is an audio interface connected to your Mac, check that device's MIDI settings too!

Thanks Unlucky, I really do appreciate your help. I was able to figure it out finally last night after 2 days. The problem was in the DP transmit. I had it checked to transmit to the 2480 via port 4 with the 2480 was connected to, but that didn't work. I then picked port five in the transmit port section and then moved the midi cables over to put five on the micro lit. As soon as I did that it worked perfectly fine. I have no idea still why it wouldn't work the other way unless the port that I was calling 2480 port 4 was not actually set up correctly for some reason. I had it set up in the audio midi section that way and in fact I think I still do, but hey, it's working now so I"m not going to complain. The only problem I'm having now is I am having some of my midi notes drop out at times and I"m not using any audio at all. The sequence is quite small as well, so I don't know what would be causing that. Any ideas would also be appreciated. Oh and by the way, I took pictures with my phone this time of all the screens and put it in my 2480 book so that when I decide to not record for a long time again and then want to come back to it, I won't be so stupid a third time around. LOL Thanks so much for your time. If I can help you anytime, please don't hesitate ask. My email is familyfirstalertceo@gmail.com or taylor777@frontier.com.
Take care
Dan

I sometimes get that note dropout with my Roland FA06 when using a soft synth. I think there is some kind of energy saver setting in the Mac that has to be turned to "never". Naturally, it'll threaten you with draining the battery or something too fast. As to the MIDI port not working, you might want to have the MIDI interface serviced, or speak to the manufacturer for advice. Might also be worth looking at your Mac's MIDI settings.

So I know it's been a LONG TIME, but I am now using Logic Pro and would like to do the same thing with that software as I was doing years ago with DP. I'm in a similar position where I'm able to get the Roland to start Logic's sequence, but it is not in time at all by the numbers and I can't seem to record anything in Logic. I think the problem like before is the ports or with Logic itself, but I don't know how to run this problem down as I'm not using anything in the way of an interface except a small little midi patch cord that on one end has the two regular midi plugs which I have going into the 2480 and the other end of that cord is a regular USB plug which is going straight into my computer through a hub. Does anyone know a good step by step way of getting these two to want to work together? I sure would appreciate it very much. Thanks in advance. Oh and in Logic I have noticed at the top of the screen where it says in and out that there is nothing there yet I have pick those in other areas of the program. I'm stumped!!!!! Please Help!!!!!
