What should I be doing with my 1680?

My current recording setup is a laptop with an mbox running PT 10. Is there something I could do with my 1680 that would be worth the trouble of using it?
I see how the 1680 could be useful for something like live recording but I almost never gig. And, when I record at home it's just a self-produced project and no need for a live mixing.
My only guess is it might be useful for fader-riding. But, that seems like an awful big fader footprint. I only need to ride one at a time!
Thanks for any ideas.

I've never found a good enough reason to use the 1680 tied to the pc and I'm in much the same boat as you. I do like some of the effects in the 1680 though. If I were working on a personal project, I'd probably use the 1680 once in awhile as an external effect unit, hooked up digitally to the pc soundcard.
I do also use the 1680 to share tracks with a friend who doesn't use a pc for recording... but there again, I need to have the time to actually work on personal projects for that to be meaningful.

I like some of the onboard effects, too. Actually, there were some effects on the 840 I liked even better than the 1680.
The 1680 would be great for young people who are forming bands and practicing in garages, etc. My buddy and I used to spend hours and late nights with the old vestax 4-track cassette recorder  The Roland is miles ahead of that.

...I assume for a lot of these kids, the learning curve will be too steep... FX is probably the only thing to use the 1680 in your situation.
I don't know your setup, but drum recording might be a second reason (if your audio in does not let you record 8 tracks). I also had the impression that the latency on the VS is really good when recording vocals. That may help a lot cause performances degrade a lot when latency get up to some ms (!!).

As a direct recording device for any type of guitar,the VS1680
is easily as good as anything else you will find anywhere.
And trust me. it took 15 years before I realized it myself.
If there's a problem, it's only that the concept and the method for applying the direct recording settings was never described in the manual.
It also gives you the option for a digital signal as well.
I'm not sure how this site works but I'd be happy to share the method. It's pretty involved, but in the end it works like a charm.

Which learning curve good Dr.? The younger generation, from my observation is ingrown into and with technology and wouldn't hsve a problem figuring out how to operate a VS. They master anything that looks like or operates like a computer.

Well that's the reason why a 1680 wouldn't be easy for them... I really love the beast, but its UI seems rather gameboyish...

I tried over the years to utilize the VS-1680 in some way but it fell to the wayside. What I did find after converting the tracks to .wav files and importing to ProTools is that those tracks sounded great
It was always the closed, proprietary system that prevented the VS machines from getting integrated into evolving platforms and gaining a jolly good cult-like status.
More modern platforms are just ... more fluid and flexible. New systems are just more friendly, fall in line with accepted norms - young musicians can record on their table or phone and navigate easier.
