Trying to insert a compressor with REAPER >> the stereo track coming from our DAC . Wanting to eliminate the hardware comp, we now have , between the VS and the DAC up to REAPER for our master mix ..
Seems that all the effects /apps are after the fact ...

Couldn't you use a VS compressor on its output?

Couldn't you use a VS compressor on its output? We are using a hardware comp from the VS output to the DAC -- Thought we could eliminate the hardware -- & INSERT a comp across the stereo mix as it hits the REAPER recording ---- for our mixdown. I know I can execute the comp app post . Just want to tame the mix coming out of the ROLAND.

and thus why I suggested, couldn't you use a software compressor from your VS fx cards on the output of the VS in place of the hardware compressor you now use? You would insert it across the stereo mix BEFORE it leaves the VS, rather than AFTER it hits Reaper....... what's the difference there?

Okay - just wondering if you could do that from the VS side. I would think you could get Reaper to do what you want, but since nobody else has piped in with suggestions, I guess it's anybody's guess. I haven't used Reaper much at all and don't have it loaded on a machine I have access to for at least the rest of today, so I'm no help...

Thanks
REAPER -- has a nice feature setup -- to insert hardware really easily... only DAW I know with that feature with ease.
Just want to tame the mix on the way in...

You can either open the MASTER track tab (I believe under VIEW) or you can apply FX to a track by clicking on the FX button (in its track panel). If you don't see the FX button, drag the panel down or out to the right and more options will magically appear

Yeah....... you ancient school guy, you... you need to get into the 21st century buddy - like me - I just put together a new machine with Windows XP!! - the Pro version even! Talk about smokin' state of the art! It's even got a USB port on it!
I'm gettin' me one of those USB ports drilled into my VS2480-- then we will be stepping into the 22nd Century.
I have 5 PC 's ..Win 7 & 8 === each built for a specific task /// keeps them smoking...

just out of curiosity, what hardware compressor have you been using for this task?
asking because hardware comps and eqs 'usually' (read: almost always) sound much better than a software plugin emulation. in your situation, are you wanting to do this to keep the signal in the digital realm coming off the VS into the PC? because you would need to place the comp after the VS on the master bus, or in the VS post mix. either way, certainly before you hit the PC.

Have used about 9 since 1980 --- From $2500 beauties >> down to my current >> which is a DEQ 2496 --
Coming out analog from the VS to the DEQ -- then up to the converter ...
Just sold our SPECK EQ's we used for years ...

wow. ok, I certainly see your need for better compression post-VS/pre-converter. I'd go with 1)selling off the gear you don't need or use, and invest in another analog stereo comp. OR 2)don't use VS DAC, and go straight digital hitting the converter softer so you can use a comp plugin, this way at least you can avoid 2 unnecessary conversions. what interface/converters are you using?

Hello C jo Go why not recorded directly in reaper, while going through the vs roland. and put a compressor in reaper insert? I do it, it works. Luke .

I have came out of the roland's SPDIF into a usb soundcard (with spdif i/o) into reaper, staying digital all the way. Could also use the AES i/o or other digital i/os on the roland to keep the signal digital for sake of preservation.
