Hi All,
There is a person on craigslist near me selling a si-24 for $50. I already own 2 vs2480s and I have them connected via midi.
Let me know if I am missing something. My understanding is that if I were to get a SI-24 and connect it via RBUS with the VS2480 I am just getting the usage of the SI-24s 8 mic inputs.

Seems like it might not be worth it. It would take up valuable desk space were I to get it.

Anyone in here using the the si24 with a VS240?

Cheers,
Ian

Ian:

You WILL get the 8 SI-24 mIc inputs, however, this will NOT add 8 to the 2480's 16.

The 2480 has a max number of 16 inputs, regardless of how they are connected. If you connect 8 additional inputs via R-BUS, you trade those for 8 of the internal inputs.

Be aware, too, that SI-24 phantom power is only 15v, instead of the standard 48.

The -24 makes a very good control surface for REAPER. The motorized faders are handy-- but as a 2480 user you already know that,

Hope this helps you think. $50 is a steal for te -24. IIRC, mine was $300 used about eight years ago.

Not true, surely? You can route any or all 8 of the R-BUS inputs via the Patchbay (e.g. to input channels 17-24). You just have to chose whether to give up the Coaxial and/or Optical stereo inputs for 4 of them.

Sadly, it is true that you will not gain an extra 8 inputs. You will simply trade the 8 inputs you assign (1-8, 9-16) from the 2480 to the si-24.

I'd grab it for $50.

The 2480 makes a great control surface for Reaper, too.

Yes it does. The -24 and the 2480 use the same control overlay, so set one up and you're good for the other as well.

Thanks for the info. Doesn't sound like I need it.
I'll pass.

I'm puzzled here.

You do in fact get 8 extra inputs when using the R-BUS input. I have been doing this for years with my VSR-880 connected to my VS-2480.

Maybe the confusion is that you can only record 16 track at once.

But if you were using the 2480 and an R-BUS equipped device you would in fact have 24 usable channels.

Am I missing something?

I understood the SI-24 can be used with several VS-24xx machines, but am wondering if it would also work well with the VSR-880?

The VSR-880 can do many things, but having more direct access to all this would be very welcomed.
I hope this can be done by connecting the SI-24 to it.

(playback levels, pan, EQ and who knows the joystick can be put to use as well)

Any info/experiences?

Thanks!

Hello PTR,
This way you can connect Roland SI24 to Roland VSR880, via R-Bus socket. But you will only have the advantage of being able to use SI24 input preamplifiers only, Volume faders will not work, Pan. EQ etc. you will not be able to use these additions. The inputs will be audible and can be used for recording tracks to the Roland VSR880, only the Gain controls will be active. SI24 preamplifiers work very well, but you will not have 48v phantom power. As I remember, there seems to be phantom power 15v. Roland SI24 in this case is suitable only as a buffer input amplification for XLR microphone inputs and that's it. SI24 will do this job very well. I have a Roland SI24 and a Roland VSR880, the SI24 is lying, good, beautiful and unused, like in a museum. Ah, in addition to the Roland SI24, there is a Roland RPC1 R-Bus Interface sound card for a computer, which is compatible with M-Audio drivers. That's about all I can tell you.
