I need the same link. I need the link to the file for version 2.05 so I can upgrade my 840EX to version 2.05. If anyone has one that works, that they personally used I would really appreciate it. The one with the MIDI files on the Roland website does not work.

Anyone who can help? I would be very grateful! Thanks in advance!

How do you mean - "it doesn't work"?
There's only one 2.05 version to get and that's the one from the Roland website. If it didn't work for you, then there must be something else to it - dare I say - user error...

Can you explain what didn't work?
How far did you get in the update process before you realized it didn't work?

It may be that you need to provide us with details about what you have done to do the update in order for us to help you out here.

I get the 840 EX in "Waiting for MIDI" mode and then I launch the program and Send the files to it it. It sends them one by one and says "Send Complete" when done. But 840 EX is still is still in "waiting for MIDI" mode. It never gets to "Version UP?" like it is supposed to.

After additional research I think the problem is my USB "device" it is crude by any standards. Simply has a MIDI IN and a MIDI out cable to USB with a connector in the middle with LED's to show Tx and Rc. I am buying a MIDIman 2x2 on Craigslist for $10 this weekend and I will try that next. Elsewhere on the forum someone successfully upgraded to 2.05 using a MIDIman 1x1, so I hope the 2x2 works.

The midiman should certainly work - I used one many years ago without any problem.

You might try using the other midi cable (or switching them around), as I've heard before that some of those usb/midi cables are labeled backwards.

You're on the right track though.

Thank you. Yes I already tried switching them around, using one instead of both, every possible combination there is with two MIDI ports on the 840 RX and two cable ends. I am curious though about your comment. So you have heard of a setup using USB to MIDI IN and MIDI out cables working? Maybe some work and some don't? Is that the case? If so that is very peculiar because there is not much to them. Just curious.

Yep - some do and some don't.
The only midi connections I have ever made between pc and vs has always been through dedicated midi ports on pci soundcards, except once... So I've not had much personal experience with the usb/midi cables, but the one worked, IIRC.

But I have followed many conversations about them and have found that there didn't seem to be a connection between price and success.

I've always used the SMF tool that Roland provides to act as my midi send from the pc. Are you also using that, or some other sequencer? Are you using a pc, or a mac? I wouldn't know what might be different between the two, since I have almost always worked on a pc... and I wouldn't imply that you'd have better success with one over the other.

Roland used to provide os updates through floppy disk, zip disk and then through the pc/mac download files. I have used all three forms at one time or another on 3 different vs models and never had a failed update. I did have one experience where the update appeared to hang, when it was finished. I finally got tired of waiting and powered down, expecting to do it over again. But when I powered back up, the update had apparently taken..... Curious, but only that one time.

You might try the usb/midi adapter with another computer, if you have access to one or more. Maybe it's the particular computer configuration and not necessarily the cable/adapter...... just a suggestion.

Yes I am using the SMF tool from Roland on a PC. Maybe I will try another machine although it is playing the MIDI files one at a time, showing progress and which file it is sending at any given moment. SMF is playing the files in order as it should and they are going "somewhere." But they are not getting to the 840 EX, or the 840 EX is not recognizing them. My suspicion is that the files are not getting to the end of the MIDI cable in a readable format so the 840 EX is not accepting them. It would have been nice if the SMF app. had some kind of protocol recognition function so that it would at least tell you if it sees the 840 EX or not. But hey it works fine and I am convinced it will eventually work for this upgrade to 2.05 with the right MIDI device to interface with the 840 EX.

My USB to MIDI apparatus may be completely hosed. I say this because I get no LED's to light on the connector no matter what I am doing. If it was working it should at the very least show Tx on the LED on the USB / Computer side when SMF is playing those files into the 840 EX.

My USB to MIDI apparatus my also be uni-directional, so it can only send data from a MIDI device TO a Computer using USB. Maybe it is not designed to go be used the way I am trying to use it. It might be for transferring MIDI files to a DAW from a MIDI device, but not for transferring MIDI files from a DAW to a MIDI device.

I was thinking more along the lines that even though the SMF tool is sending the files out of the pc, maybe there could be something funky in the design of the usb ports that could muck it up...... I don't have any idea what, but you have also indicated something of an example of what maybe could happen.

If your cable has a y-design and two midi plugs, then I'd say that the expectation is for 2-way and not limited to in or out only.

Cabled MIDI Man to 840 EX and PC via USB. Played MIDI files into 840 EX using SMF tool, and Shazam! Got “Now Receiving version 205...” with bit count increasing in hex format.

When all files had been played by SMF it said “Complete.” I clicked “OK” and got “Version UP?” on the 840 EX. Said “Yes” and got “Version Up” "SYSTEM WRITE" on 840 EX. When done it said END!!!! “Please power OFF/ON." I powered down, then held MONITOR / SELECT and SOLO and powered back on to check version to make sure it worked. Was delighted to see “VS 840 EX Ver 2.05” “March 21, 2001.”

Cabled new IDE CF card read/write device and powered up but it erred out when initializing so I shut it down and moved the jumpers on the board and then powered back up and it recognized the card reader this time.

But it would not recognize 16GB CF card, so I went to UTILITY, DISK, INITIALIZE, Sure? Yes. And it is initializing now as I type. Woohoo! Will update again after testing read write to CF card.
