In the manual (pg.208) it say "You can send the VS-2000CD's metronome output as a click track to a drummer's headphone amp using a Direct path."

I'd like to be able to do this, but I can't see how to route the metronome to a Direct path. Is it really possible? If so, any tips would be much appreciated.

All the best, VS people

The headphone output is all you need if I recall correctly. Haven't had my VS for a while now. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the response. I'm familiar with sending the metronome to the headphone outs but I was particularly interested in the manual's comment about sending it to a direct path.

The underlying reason I'm interested is that if I can get the metronome on a direct path, I should be able to record it to a track easily (without a messy workaround like sending it out of the desk and back in again to record).

Switch on Rythm Track and your metronome is on tracks 17&18. Bounce to any two tracks to print. (See pp. 305-308.)

Ah. I had not thought of that as I normally have Rhythm Track turned off. Thank you, I'll try it next time I have a chance.

I gave this a test today. From what I could tell, the metronome does not go to tracks 17/18 even when rhythm track is turned on.

Edit: I just found something weird that might be related to this. When I have Rhythm Track turned on and go into the Metronome page, the display I see is not the same as shown on page 308 of the User Manual. Rather, I always see a Metronome settings page that includes an OUTPUT SELECT field. I am guessing this is related somehow to the fact that my metronome is not going to the Rhythm Track.

---

As a workaround I can create a simple user drum pattern that replicates a metronome and that does appear on tracks 17/18, so works ok for my purposes.

Although I've had the VS2000 for a long time, this was the first time I've dug into making user drum patterns and I was pleasantly surprised to find a pretty decent step sequencer lurking within. Man, these Roland machines are very mature and deep designs!

aanon,
I think you're right, the internal basic metronome doesn't go through the Rhythm track. I believe the manual info is misleading.
(pg.208) "You can send the VS-2000CD's metronome output as a click track to a drummer's headphone amp using a Direct path."
This means that rather than using the basic metronome you can set up a 'click track' by using patterns and sounds in the Rhythm track, and for example send that to a direct path.

Re the metronome OUTPUT SELECT field. That was added in version 2. Previously the metronome went only into the monitor output.
You can still download the version 2 addendum from Roland:

Thanks for the clarification. For now, I think I'll do it the "messy" way by sending the metronome out by aux and back in on a spare input. At least this lets me add a little reverb and I can directly control its volume with a grouped fader. The tiny bit of roundtrip latency is nothing, really. Back to making music!
