Nobody?! Appreciate it's been OOP for a number of years, but presumably it sold well enough when first released? I found one copy for sale on Amazon, but the seller in Florida won't post to the UK.

Hey, I wasn't expecting a mint copy! I might be an eejit, but I'm not that much of an eejit! I don't know many folk who buy a new book, read it once and then throw it away?

Zero on eBay, sorry to say. I ticked the the 'Sold' and 'Completed' filters as well, and still nothing same up. How far back the search facility goes? Seems to indicate that one's never been listed! Makes me think 2 things - It was that good, no owner wants to part with their copy, or Sales were that bad, there's only half-a-dozen out there! ;-)

I bought this book years ago. After reviewing it for a couple of days, I shelved it and never opened it again. Didn’t find it to be very helpful to me.
At some point, years ago, I believe I sold it on this forum.
There are many useful, written resources available here on VS Planet, besides the direct access to the expertise of our members.
Good luck!

Hey, E.
Have you gotten a free copy of Frank Griffith’s “Brown Bag VS Manual”?
If not, go to the 2480 forum (you’ll readily see the thread there) and request a copy. It’s loaded with useful VS info... much of it applicable to all the VS machines.
Guarantee you’ll dig it!

Nope, but I have downed Laura's equivalent for the 1680...which is the only VS I've got!
(Mind you,I did spot a 2000CD at a 'good price' a few days ago and am tempted to buy myself an early Xmas present! Not really sure I can qualify the purchase to Mrs.Eejit though!)

E — The 2000 is super-machine!
This is the one I own now. Progressed from the 880 (never quite totally got along with it), to the 1680 (which I loved), and finally to the 2000... my favorite and best sounding IMHO. You will freak out after you connect it to VGA... mine is 17 inches... and will never go back to using the tiny screen on the 1680.
Selling the 1680 will generate some funds, which can be applied to the 2000 purchase. Since I don’t record bands, mostly it’s just me and a friend or two on occasion, the 2480 was never a temptation.
If you truly love recording, I’m confident Mrs. E will say OK... especially if you promise her a song... AND to keep her warm all the winters from now on. I know how much Irish girls need to be kept warm. (There’s an Irish lass I’ve been in love with here in FL for a few years, but I’m in a complicated situation.)
All the best... and do let us know how it goes.

One of the drawbacks with the 2000CD is the likely import/customs duty/tax which could be/will be levied - I don't seem able to establish how much it would be, and although the unit's listed as being in good condition, getting a refund from the other side of the world if the VS turns out to be an expensive paperweight might be a problem! The other drawback might be getting my head caved in by a cudgel wielded by Mrs.E. I'm impressed that yours is 17 inches. I can't boast the same. What size is your monitor? ;-) The VGA is another point - there's no mention of the unit having a VGA card, so I conclude it doesn't have one. And they were/are a pricey optional extra from what I gather? All Irish colleens tend to have very cold feet (so I've read). They're also quick to temper, and fast on their feet. If I even breathed that I was contemplating a song for her, the alarms bells would ring, and I'd be watched like a hawk. Her psychic powers would heighten to a dangerously high level - you could liken it to being at DefCon 1. Now THAT's a complicated situation! I am tempted though. You're right about the 1680 sale. Might enquire about the VGA with the seller and decide from there. Anything else to be wary of in your opinion? (With the 2000, not Irish women!)

Advice - don't sell one before you have the other and learn its pros and cons in your own environment.

E — That was hilarious, mate! (Many thanks for the heads-up on Irish ladies.)
Our friend, Up, is correct. Wasn’t suggesting that you should sell first before buying.
You do raise a lot of potential probs related to the honesty of some folks selling online, and the complications involved in undoing transactions. Can be a bit scary.
And, yes, the VGA adapter (tough to find, I hear... which also affects the selling price) and the VGA Itself will be added costs. Additionally is the issue of effects. So it is a big decision.
These are most of the considerations involved. But after pondering all this now, you are in a so much better state to find a 2000, maybe in the Emerald Isle or perhaps the UK, in good working order and with the add-ons you’re gonna wanna have to complete that fab track for Mrs. E in the hopefully near future.
So keep an eye out, my friend.

I don't believe there's a better reference to the vs2480 than Frank Griffith's.

You’re likely right, Hard.
And much of it can be transferred over and applied to the other recorders in the series.

Yes, you make a lot of sense. I wouldn't have sold the 1680 before getting the 2000- it would be nice to become adept at using it first. And yes, I think I'll wait to see if a 2000 comes up at a reasonable cost a bit nearer to home. I could do well out of this decision - think how impressed you-know-who will be when I tell her that I've avoided temptation, and that 'common sense' prevailed for once. I might even be elevated to the position of being more popular than the cat.
Only temporarily, obviously.

As one of the authors of the book, it's amazing to me that 15 years later it's still being sought out!
The book was written by three of us who were (at the time) very active contributors here at VS-Planet: Chris Skelnik (me, aka Hook), Vince Gibbs (aka FunkyBeat), and Karl Frick (aka LakeStone Karl). I focused on the VS-880/890 series, FunkyBeat focused on the VS-1680/1880 series, and LakeStone Karl focused on the VS-2480 series. I also wrote a couple of intro chapters, and Funky did an Appendix section on the VS-2000CD.
I still have copies of the chapters I wrote in Word, but I don't have a PDF or anything like that of the book. If I did, I'd send it to you.
The book was a fun project to work on, but it was definitely a "niche" project. I think the publisher only sold a couple thousand copies, never enough for any of us to earn any royalties on (which is fine, 'cause we never thought we would!).
Here is the official announcement on VS-Planet of when the book was released:
http://www.vsplanet.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=492400
The bottom line is that all the info we put in the book can be found in various formats here on the Planet. We didn't invent anything new, we just took the collective knowledge of the members of VS-Planet and put it into a (hopefully) easy-to-read format, with some tips and tricks along the way.
I do see there is one copy available on the US Amazon site for ONLY $970 - but shipping is another $3.99, so it's probably not worth it

Cripes! Just as well I never posed a question along the lines of "The writers - did they really know what they were on about?"! I truly had no idea of your nom de plume! Was this an 'open secret' or have I blown your cover?! And then to hear that even YOU haven't got a copy! (Incidentally, you can sort-of piece one together if you want - https://flylib.com/books/en/4.337.1/ has it broken down. Just don't tell the authors!)
Joking apart, I just thought it'd be nice to have the actual book sitting on the bookshelf. But yes - you're right - $3.99 for shipping is simply extortionate.
Thank you for putting me out of my misery. I guess I'll just stick to the handy Roland publications.
Oh joy. ;-)

E — You obviously have a tremendous amount of insight into the psyche of you-know-who. Guessing you’ve been together many a year... maybe a few decades?
But I‘ll offer one additional tip: No matter what, don’t let her feline into the recording studio... that thing will shed hair all over and plug up the inner workings of the 1680 — so keep it covered when not in use.
If the above destroys the relationship... well, then so be it. You can always find a prettier Colleen, no? (If you do, be sure to let me know if she has a real cute sister... I’m not doing so great with my lassie here in FL.)

Yes, together 36 years. Laughed, cried, wealthy, broke - all the musical clichés you can think of are in there somewhere! To sum her up in one song? "I love to watch a woman dance"/Eagles. Not the lyrics particularly, nor the chord progression - just the overall feeling of the song. Peat log fire, curtains drawn, snoring Labrador, glass of Bushmills. Hark at me! Move over Taupin/Henley! Sound advice re cat hair. Will keep it covered when not in use. Doubt the animal will appreciate it, but I'm thinking patio slabs. They should do the trick. ;-)

Quite right, Up. Years ago, I decided to 'upgrade' from my original 1680 to a Tascam 2488. I poked and prodded that silly thing for three days, then returned it. Fortunately, the 1680 was still in the house. Please forgive my heresy...
The true upgrade came in the form of a 2000, followed by a pair of 2480s. There is also an 880 VXpanded, acquired in a bundle with a Roland 1680/1880 case and a working CDRW unit.
I'd have to say, though, that the 2000 is my favorite. I do mainly location recording of orchestras and choirs, and the eight inputs are usually sufficient. If nothing else, the VGA, kb/mouse add a bit of 'wow' factor for the conductor.
